OT: Officially a civilian!

I got my DD 214 from Uncle Sam today. 8 years of service with an Honorable Discharge! Although with the exception of my first 6 months, they have all been under Klinton. And I can truely say that I have seen the slow death of our armed services. I can still say that I am truely proud to have served my country, and stood the watch as we like to say in the Navy. I have served at sea, overseas, and stateside. I have truely got to do and see lots of cool things.

The best part though is knowing that there are at least 37 people I have counted, who would be dead if it were not for me. I am not bragging on myself, but these are the kind of events that stick out in your mind.
Also that there are 2 children on this planet that I delivered with my own two hands. Talk about a great feeling. Being a Hospital Corpsman was the best! Serving with the Marines was even better.

I miss the comradery already, and the job security was definantly a plus. But it has come time for me to move on. I am EVER proud to serve, and if so called would gladly and boldly go again tomorrow. But again as we say in the Navy....

:( :)"I STAND RELIEVED!" :) :(

Doc,

Congratulations! I was dumb enough to wait 20 years for the DD214 that counted! :D

From time to time, many vets miss the unity of command, close friends, and the feeling of accomplishment we experienced in the military. OTOH, your house will now become your castle, your freedoms increased and your financial security and rewards more challenging than ever!

In the military, I often said if we were a private corporation we'd go bust in 30 days. Well, now that I've seen the civilian side, I owe the military an apology.

Caprice rather than regulations rule the civilian world. In the military, the same regulations used to direct and punish you also protected you - and (Glory be!) they all were in writing.

In the civilian world, it's much more "who you know" and what they think of you than it was in the military. That's not necessarily better or worse, perhaps not even "different", but it's true to a greater extent than I found when working for Uncle Sugar.

Best of luck, Doc. I bet you knock 'em dead! :D

Congratulations! I hit my 1 year mark Aug 30, still got a few more years left :)
BTW were you a navy or FMF Doc?

Congratulations and best wishes for your next career.

You have to be there when it's all over. Otherwise you can't say "I told you so."

Better days to be,

DOCSpanky,
Thank you. It has always been interesting that I don't remember that I ever heard a person say that his military experience was a waste of time. Many say they wouldn't want to do it again, but it was a valuable experience. I was sorry to see the draft ended as I think the lessons learned, especially the discipline, in the military are valuable throughout one's lifetime. The comradery there is only approached by those careers such as LEO or Firefighters where teamwork is important to your survival. Again, Thank you for your service. Jerry

Thanks Doc...........Dennis put it quite well and beemerb has a good point. Not a bad idea to at least hook up with a reserve or guard unit. More fun without bein full time and get enough points the check is nice for when you are long in the tooth. Get enough federal service to qualify one way or the other.

Nikita Khrushchev predicted confidently in a speech in Bucharest, Rumania on June 19, 1962 that: " The United States will eventually fly the Communist Red Flag...the American people will hoist it themselves."

Waiting for the results of my med board to come back so I can get MY 214. Been past due now for a little over 6 months. Uncle Sam's Canoe Club doesn't seem to want to let me go. Regardless of the findings, I'm out. Twelve years and some change is enough. Someone else's turn.

Places on a ship you HAVE to have a hook-up:

supply, personnel, and medical

If you need me to explain it, then you were never there! :D

Thanks, Doc. Be well in the "next life".

Thanks for your service.

It's sad that we can't keep people in anymore.
However, I have a hard time telling a person to stay if I really don't think it's the best thing for them.

Good Luck in your new pursuits!

My thanks, too, Marine! Best of luck on Civvy Street!

PS: A Corpsman? Come to Florida, where there's a shortage of health care people. With an RN or LVN you can write yourself a decent ticket.

Thank you Sir, for your service to our country.

DOCSpanky-

As an ex HM3-AC who saw Desert Sheild/Storm a week late on video from Antarctica, I also remember the lives that I've touched. They will always be with you! :)

Now that you're back in civie-land, you will find that of all the new friends you make, those that have "been-there, done-that" will always be just a little bit closer.

I can't say that I enjoyed my whole tour, but I'm glad I did it.

Best of luck, God Bless!

I'm in Florida, I may get back into medicine soon, but for now am enjoying the only complaints coming from the birds and squirrels when I run a mower through their peaceful morning ;)

Bob, you swabbie, go fetch me some gig line.....

Or as i said to the baby Doc who took my spot on the U.S.S. Morrison;

"I got more time on the head than you got in the Navy, so don't f***ing tell me how a nurse taught you, here's how it's done!"

Question:

Q: How do you replace a Navy Nurse on a ship?

A: Put a nail in the bulkhead to hold the narcotics keys! :D

Q: Why do Navy Nurses close their eyes during sex?

A: They can't stand to see a Corpsman have a good time! :D
