OT: Harpoon/Harpoon II?

The threads about the Oscar got me thinking about this. Anyone here play the Harpoon or Harpoon II computer games? If so, do you have a multiplayer version? And do you wanna go head to head? ;)

For those who do not know, Harpoon/Harpoon II is a pretty realistic naval strategy game. Its not perfect, but in the world of strategic gaming, its pretty definitive. The only problem with the game is the rather, uhm, stupid opponent (the computer). If you have half a brain you can thrash the computer every time in the balanced scenarios. The computer will win only in the scenarios where the deck is heavily stacked one way and you play the 'weak' side. I recently discovered a multiplayer verison of the old Harpoon I version, and I'm currently looking for a victi- errr, an opponent ;)

Anyone?

I used to play Harpoon alot. I haven't played in about a year. I don't know if I have the multi-player version. I'll have to dig it out and load it up. I'll get back to you once I find it.

Used to...

Tough game. Good Game. Too strategy pure... I want to be able to have a little more direct control over my platforms.

You might laugh in the face of FEAR... but unless your armed, its a nervous, unconvincing, little laugh.

I find the toughest thing about the game to be the interface...once you get the hang of that you can USUALLY win...the computer's units do not have flexible strategies. Now, multiplayer...thats a whole different ballgame. ;)

And I know what you mean about it being 'pure strategy.' Its more like a chess game with modern chessmen than it is a war game. If you like to shoot things up and watch things explode, it sure isn't the game for you. ;)

So, anyone? JCH?

Mike

Great game. Not sure if I have the multiplayer version. I had H1 6-7 years ago, didn't have enough hardware to play H2 when it came out, haven't tried to get it running since.

Not sure I want to try getting multiplayer running. It could be a *huge* time sink. Great game.

Ooooooh me too! Me too! Back when I had time, I could lose hours with H1. Never saw II, but I assume it was glitzy graphics, which I didn't need to hold my interest. I've lost the game, so if this discussion goes anywhere, someone let me know how to join in. I consider myself a regular sea-and-air going Von Clausewitz!

The worst parts were: Lack of aerial refueling, inability of the game to simulate "reasonable" air battles, and virtually no way to effectively direct or control submarine assets.

Sure miss that game. If anyone gets hot with this, please email me. hutchfmf@msn.com
