OT: Google search engine

This one looks like a good one for research. They claim over a billion web wage index and I tend to believe them.

I entered my full name just for grins and damned if they didn't dredge up a letter to the editor the Las Vegas Review Journal printed May 1999.

I put "gun control" in and got the following:
"Google results 1-10 of about 192,000 for "gun control". Search took 0.05 seconds.
Category : Society > Issues > Gun Control > Pro-Gun Rights Organizations"

Impressive to say the least.

Oatka, I like them, too. They have fun artwork at holidays.

Not only are they fast they are good. Pages are listing in some prioity sights most related tend to be listed first. The billion pages indexs is because they basically access all the other search engines when you ask it to search. Don't remember exactly how it works.

Google bases priority in search rankings on the number of links established to any one site, and they may also use the number of hits as well.

Well...

I found a couple of dead ancestors within a fraction of a second. I also found a photo of one of my kids in even a shorter amount of time. Oh well, I guess privacy is a thing of the past.

Did a search on myself.... kind of scary with all the links it came up with.... Seems I've left tracks all over the place on debating the 2nd.

Yahoo! now uses the Google search engine. So you can get the best of Yahoo! and Google.

Now if iWon would fix their site and make it more usable, maybe I could win something and buy a few more toys!

Google is the best thing to happen to the internet since Al Gore. Seriously, it's the world's only psychic search engine. And you can't argue with the interface! Now that's economy of design in action. If you can't find it with Google, you didn't really need it anyway.

PS: The proprietors have a great sense of humor too. Gotta keep your eye on the site, it changes subtly all the time.

Oatka, Thanks for the Google suggestion. Its been a while since I've spent much time looking around a search engine, but this was more than worth the time spent. Not only did I find lots of articles written with my site listed as a source (most with outdated links back to my site), but I even found a site with the same name - although obviously with a different address. Completely unbeliveable! Not only do I constantly find other sites using images stolen from my site, but now I find one with the same name. It's enough to drive you insane.

Either way, thanks again for the suggestion!

Simple, fast, and thorough. As noted, it's spooky seeing what all you've done in the past! ;)

Seronac: Yup, Yahoo, my FORMERLY favorite search engine, is now using Google; And since they switched, I've had one search after another where they'll find, oh, 5 or 6 matches... and only display 3 or 4 of them, with no way to reach the others. Not to mention that when you actually go through the list of hits, you find many redundant hits for the same site; Word you're searching for occurs twenty times in a page, apparently that page counts as twenty hits! :(

Maybe it's just some bugs that have to be worked out from the transition.
