Ya know.. I can't figure out if all this comes out of military cutbacks and poorly trained pilots... or poorly maintained aircraft or what. But to think that I was such a die-hard fighter-pilot wannabie at one time.. it kinda scares me. If we had a different president in a different time.. perhaps.

F-16 crashes into Atlantic; pilot rescued
The Associated Press
ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (August 31, 2000 5:59 p.m. EDT http://www.nandotimes.com) - An F-16 Air Force jet on a training flight crashed into the ocean Thursday just off the New Jersey coast.
The pilot was rescued by a New Jersey State Police boat and taken to a nearby hospital, said Staff Sgt. Barbara Harbison of the state Department of Military and Veterans Affairs.
The pilot reported a problem with the oil pressure just before the engine failed about 3:40 p.m. and the jet went down about a mile and a half into the ocean, said Ray Martyniuk, another spokesman for the department.
The pilot was on a routine training flight for the 177th Fighter Wing.
Harbison said three other planes that were flying in formation with the downed fighter returned to their base at Atlantic City International Airport without problems.
It was the third U.S. crash this month involving an F-16.
On Monday, an Air Force reservist on a training mission was killed when his F-16 crashed in a Texas field. Another F-16 crashed Aug. 7 in the Nevada desert after apparently clipping another jet during a training exercise. That pilot ejected safely, and the other plane was able to land.
