Original Condition or Fix to Shoot?

Boy, this question comes up more and more as cowboys start digging up the old guns and shooting them. I had no problem taking a basically fair condition 1897 Winchester pump shotgun and having some work done on it. It was obviosuly a pieced together 97 Winchester. Barrel, magazine, and receiver probably all came from different guns. Had the barrel cut to 20 inches and new front bead. But what if you come across a above average condition (good) 73 Winchester rifle. Everything is great on it except the barrel. Would you have the barrel relined and effect its value? Or leave it alone as a piece of history?
