Original case

When buying a used handgun how important do you consider getting the orginal case, opposed to just a case or no case. Especially if your buying to put safe not to carry very much. Not a true collectors gun but something you would like to hang on to.

I don't understand

An original box is 'nice', I guess, but I usually just throw them out.
(Even though I've seen some Ruger boxes selling in excess of $100).

I buy guns to shoot; I sold off the guns I don't shoot. Just me.

I shoot mine, just some not as often as others. I store mine in a rack in the safe and store cases elsewhere, but I really wouldn't want to throw my orginal cases away. I don't have resale in mind as more of a complete package.

cases and boxes are irrelevent to me .....and I rarely keep them.

Everything I own / I shoot - regardless whether its a $ 700 gun or a $ 4,000 gun ....and while it has probably increased in value ...how much its gone up is also irrelevent because I rarely sell anything. I track values only to make sure I'm insured properly on my Homeowner's policy.

I also don't much care about the case - am a practical guy, and the supplied case or box for most handguns is normally not suitable to keep and transport your gun in. I can see that being of value in a rare and/or antique firearm for a collector.

If the original case is included it usually tells me that the gun was taken care of. (Of course all generalizations are false).

It makes it easier to buy.

i don't have any small kids around and don't have a safe so boxes work well for me.

if i happen to sell any of the glocks having the same s/n on the box is a nice touch.

i bought the python new in '71 and threw the box away early on, oh to wind back the hands of time......

I keep all of the plastic cases guns come. They take up alot of room and my wife doesn't appreciate it. I just like having all the original stuff, manuals etc.

I think it a nice touch. I have a 70's detonics combatmaster with the orginal pouch (case) which I'm very glad to haveI also have some other discontinued guns with orginal cases. bearone2 don't you hate lookin' back, I sold an orginal 67 chevy impala super sport for $125. "bone stock"

Only if its an antique and the box would add to the collectibility. Other than that I don't really care.

Which is exactly the attitude that makes those old cases hard to find / valuable. It's hard to say what will be considered collectible in 20, 30, even 50 years. I like to hang on to the original cases and paperwork simply because you never know.

I'm a gun buyer, not a gun trader, so when one ends up in my care it's there for the long haul. I may never sell it but it will be something nice to hand down to my kids or grandkids, so I look at the boxes as a way to increase their enjoyment down the road.

box doesn't really matter much to me in making a buy, but i will use it as a leveraging piece in the purchase and usually knock the seller down a few bucks.

now if I am selling a gun and it has the original case I will ask for a few extra bucks :D , but i will not mention it doesn't come with a case if i don't have one :)

It is NOW important to me whether I choose to keep the box and original paperwork (warranty cards, owner's manual...etc). It's strictly a personal thing. I used to toss everything out as soon as I get the gun home, but now I realize that the box & papers actually add a bit of value to the gun. Sometimes it adds as much as 10% to 15% depending on the age of the gun.

With that said, not having a box will not deter me at all from purchasing the gun.
