"Original Brenneke Slug" Source?

I'm looking for a mailorder source for Dynamit Nobel Rottweil "Original Brenneke Slug" in 12g. These are the ones with the felt wad is permanently affixed to the rear end of the slug.

Reason: In Home Defense situations, it seems not having to worry about a plastic wad detaching and hitting outside POA is a plus.

On that topic, I don't suppose there is such a thing as 00 buckshot without a wad cup. We've all seen that wad break paper outside our tight 10yd patterns. While I'm sure the wad is less lethal than the pellets, I wonder at what distance a slug is better than buckshot, not because of the spread in pattern, but because of the wad? I guess I should go back and pattern with ths in mind as well.

First, the DN "Rottweil" Brennekes are about the last load I'd want in a HD crisis. I like them on deer, but they do penetrate a bit too much for this.Usual performance on broadside shots on deer is equal size holes in and out. Big hole,s but not much expansion, hence lots more penetrating potential.

As for wads, the lethal range of the wad is probably about that distance the shot is still in the wad. I recall seeing paper broken with wads when scoring qualifiers at 15 yards, but not at 25. And, at the typical HD range, the wad's with the charge. Tha famous forensic pic of an unmate at San Quentin with a wad stuck in his pelvis after being taken down during an assault may be available on the Net. Distance was less than 10 yards, IIRC.

I'm old enough to recall 00 w/o cup wads. Patterns were not as tight as now.

Get the slugs if you want, but using them for HD may be a step in the wrong direction.

HTH....

PMC's got a 1oz Brenneke slug. Plastic wad that stays attached to slug (even after shooting through 1/2" plywood). $2/5-pack locally.

I agree w/Dave - slugs will give penetration through several walls/perps/innocents. May be handy to have some close at hand in case of a barricade situation, but ... there's better choices for indoors.

PMC Spacer/Gas check

That PMC spacer/gas check will stay on that slug only if you are not shooting it through a Patternmaster. The Patternmaster will retard it just enough to cause separation.

The only one that I tested that did not separate was the Brenke that was screwed on. Their new press fit space/gas check will also separate.

One of the things I tried to tell folks is in the new manual was that you will usually have more than one projectile to worry about in most situations.

As far as the over penetration, well at least with the correct slug/barrel combination you might only have to worry about one projectile.

So it over penetrates. I you are doing your job you will minimize your problem.

Over penetration

Well here is one for you.

Use a frangible slug. It is lighter, but you will not have to worry about over penetration.

Or you could use a rubber slug.

Or you could use Strung Buck....

But the bottom line is, if you are using either buck or slug, you are going to over penetrate at close range.

I took a 10 lb ham, mounted the thawed ham on a fense post, shot it at 5 yards with 7-1/2 bird shot. It blew the ham apart and took out half the fence post.

Oh well.

"So it over penetrates. I(f) you are doing your job you will minimize your problem."

No doubt, but most of us, during a high-pressure situation, don't have the wherewithall/training/familiarity to accurately employ a shotgun as it can be used. No disagreement - only an observation. Observe the many "just point it in the right direction" comments ....

Unless in special circumstances, I would recommend (to most) not going over #4 buck, & that depending on # of family members, lay-out, etc. Depends & no two situations are the same - similar, but not the same.

& Jim, what's that with the frangible slugs? Unschooled here ....

Good advice from all - thanks. I usually hear something, try it on the forum, and get straightened out before I make TOO big a mistake.

Frangible Slugs:

Why do you suppose both sources consider such ammo LEO only? Is there a special criminal use of frangible ammo I'm not aware of? Having used it at SigArms Academy, the idea that non-LEOs shouldn't be given access to it never came up...
