Orgin of Algore?

Where did the practice of calling him Algore spring from? That is, pressing his first and last name together like that. What does it imply/mean? Forgive my ignorance here. I see it all the time and it must symbolize something negative. I just cannot for the life of me figure out what. Can someone please let me in on the joke?
 
Rush used to do a parody of Algore to the tune of the "Chipmunks - Alvin, Simon, and Theodore" singing their Christmas carols.

Dave would say, "Alllll-gore"... replacing "Allll-vin".

It was very funny stuff.

Rush had a series of parodies several years ago in which Clinton played the mad scientist with "Algore" (ala Igor to Dr. Frankenstein) as his simple minded assistant.

I associate Algore with stars in the night sky, such as Aldeberan and Arcturus. The name sounds like it should be a star. Whether it's a red giant or white dwarf I don't know, but Algore is soon to be a black hole.
