Fellow Oregonians,
Supporters of measure 99, the "Handgun Violence Prevention Act", have apparently gathered enough signatures to make the November ballot.
There are two areas I am trying to get information on so I can work to oppose it.
1) A large number of the signatures were submitted on a type of paper not allowed by the state government. The supporters of measure 99 insisted that the argument about how the signatures would smudge when the glossy paper got wet was invalid and asked for a waiver. Another version I heard was that the glossy paper was not scannable, so Optical Character Recognition software was unable to read the information. In any event, I would like to know if these "unacceptable" signatures were used to approve the ballot, or if the approval was made without them.
2) State Senator Ginny Burdick, founder of this damned initiative, has been quoted or paraphrased as making the following statement. This was pulled from a Tyranny Response Team message board, and I am still trying to get verification from the author:
What Sen. Burdick wants in Oregon:
1. Repeal the CHL law. There are too
many people carrying concealed guns in Oregon.
2. Outlaw every private sale or transfer
of any gun. All sales must be processed through a dealer and registered with the State Police.
3. Limit citizens to purchasing one gun
per month.
4. Demonize and outlaw "Saturday Night
Specials" which comprise all affordable handguns.
5. Demonize and outlaw "assault weapons" which are guns she finds "ugly."
6. Demonize and outlaw "sniper rifles"
which are all rifles which COULD accept a scope. We used to call these "deer rifles."
7. Register all guns and begin confiscating the "dangerous" and the "unsafe" ones.
I would really appreciate any sources you could provide. I can't find anything, anywhere about these points, but I'm very sure that they reflect her attitude towards guns, so I think they might be based in fact.
Thanks, and please vote this backdoor gun registration B.S. measure back to hell where it came from
