Optimal range of bullet weight for .308

Welcome to the firing line

I don't understand the question . You need to be more specific as to what type of shooting you are doing . There are way to many variables to even take a guess at what you are really looking for .

How ever to cover all my bases . I'll say 10 feet , all weights and types of bullets . They should all work great at that range :D;)

What is the optimal range for 308 bullet weights.

Too vague a question, but I will try and guess what info you are looking for :

Not law, but general guidelines:

150 gr up to 300 yds
168 gr up to 800 yds
175 gr up to 1000 yds

Also keep in mind the Palma competition shooters shoot MOA at 1000 yds with 155 grain bullets.

Type of game ?
75 to 200 yards or 300 to 1000 yards ?

My hunting is 200 yards or less and I have had good luck with
150gr Sierra Pro Hunter and 150gr Hornady SST for deer
both perform very well
( in Florida and southern Georgia )

Hunting ? Anything from 140gr to 175gr would be good for general use . Your twist will allow you to shoot pretty much any weight bullet that is commercially loaded for the 308 .

There was a guy on another forum shooting 215 gr Bergers at 1800 yards a few months ago with a 308. With a 1:12 twist barrel no less. That isn't supposed to work, but it did.

The 308 is very versatile, especially with that twist, 125-200 gr bullets can be used. I've played around a bit with 130 gr Barnes copper bullets loaded to 3050 fps. I haven't killed anything with that combo, but from others reports it is a deadly combo out to 300ish. Later this summer I'm going to load some 200 gr Hornady ELD's for it and see what happens.

I personally think a premium 165/168 gr bullet is the most versatile choice. Lighter or heavier can be used for specific tasks, but realistically that weight will do just about anything you need a 308 to do.

308

If you are a bullet hand loader look up the M118LR it's a 308 spider the us military made for there troops the recipe is on line I drops out of super sonic at 1012 yards with a 175 grain smk!!!

165. Any 165 grain hunting bullet will kill any game in North America without having excessive felt recoil. It's construction doesn't make much difference.
