Optics?

Ok been surfing again. I got a 338 Marlin Express last year and it needs glass. I am very impressed with the cal. Now I'm not asking about my rifle (I know I like it), I'm asking if any one has used MuellerOptics in hunting? Are they good? I like the illum. target-dot with 1/8" cliks but havent had one in my hands.

I own two Mueller scopes. I have a 3-10x44 Tac II mounted on an 18" barreled AR-15. The other Mueller scope is a 4.5-14x40 APV mounted on a ruger 10/22. The 3-10 scope is made in Japan with 95% light transmission glass. It is one of the brightest scopes that I have ever looked through. IIRC all other Mueller scopes are made in China, but are of very decent quality. The APV scope has great glass, but its turrets are just OK in quality. I paid ~$115 for the APV and for that price I'm VERY happy with the quality of the glass.

To sum it up Mueller scopes are G2G in my book. I think that the 3-10 Tac II is a real steal at ~$250. Here are two links to reviews of the Tac II http://www.realguns.com/archives/126.htm

I have 4 Mueller's the clarity on those are better then my Nikon Monarch, however my guns are bench never in the brush and all are under 223 in caliber. depending on your power needs I believe the new Redfields made in Leupold factory are excellent I have a 2x7 mounted on a mini-30 and it is clear and holds zero with the recoil on the 30.

Scopes in today's market are a grab bag IMO due to outsourcing some brands made in same factory, etc., not sure high prices guarantee good scopes anymore, I'm sure many will disagree.

I don't know what kind of power range you are looking for, but to me the .338 Marlin Express is a hunting rifle and I have to agree the 2-7 power scope would be great on this type of rifle. I like the VX-II and Redfield’s both, I have a Nikon Monarch and Burris 2-7 power scopes but they don't have the eye relief the Leupold has. I’m still waiting on my first Redfield to show up but it is a 4-12X40. I decided to give it a try after looking through a 2-7 and 3-9 at the local SW.

If you really want to step up to a great scope look for a 2.6-8X36 Leupold VX3. This will keep a nice low profile and really compliment your rifles profile. Just don't put a large scope on a lever rifle; they look goofy if you do.

Unfortunately I don’t know anything about Muller scopes and can’t help you on that one. If you can find it you might try a Vortex Viper 2-7 power as well. I have one but it isn’t mounted yet but from what I can tell it is pretty good optics. Camera Land had them in stock the last few times I checked, this scope has been discontinued so they have been on sale. The only thing I don’t really like about the scope is it is bulkier than the Leupold, Nikon , and Burris scopes I own.

Also curious about these muller's. I have always been a leupold guy at heart but am alwyas willing to try something new. Plus I am fixing to be getting my ar-10 off layaway and it needs some glass.
The reviews and everything I found on this scope seem to be very good. If it can come close to the leupolds for the price, I may have just found the scope for my ar. Curiouse to hear more!!

I have a high power Mueller and for the money it is a nice scope. Optics are cleear and the adjustments are good and repeatable. For hunting the dot is pretty good and under low light conditions does add a few minutes of shooting time. ED K

The Vortex Viper's are well worth the money. I have the 2-7 mounted on my AR. Took it hog hunting a couple of weeks ago...I could still see fine through the scope even after the sun had gone down. Very bright little scope. I also have a Vortex Viper 6.5-20 on my target rifle and it is also one hell of a scope for the money...

+1 on the Redfield 2-7. I have one mounted on another one of my AR's. It is a nice bright well built scope that is worth every penny.

I guess I'm a Mueller fan boy. I have the 4-10X44 TAC II that serves on different 7.62 semi's. Great glass and repeatability. I've been using the APV's on rimfires for several years and it's the best $125 scope I have ever seen.
I'm rat holing cash for a Nightforce, or six TAC II's:eek:
