Optics that just don't belong on "that"

Looking around on a gun auction site I stumbled across an FN FNAR with a EOTech holographic sight mounted. I could not help but think of what an odd couple it made.

What are some 'odd couples' you have seen - or could think of that would be odd? ( Like imagining a Ruger 10/22 with a Trijicon ACOG )

Scoped lever actions

I agree that lever actions look better without scopes. I have a scope on my Henry 22lr because I can't see my squirrel, crow, and rabbit targets at 100 yards and that is the range I like to shoot at. Not that I would actually hunt them at that range, it is just target shooting with a little challenge for me. In reality, I probably wouldn't shoot at a rabbit over about 50-60 yds. Also the targets are smaller than the actual animals. Shotguns also look better without scopes, but if I was hunting deer with slugs I might want one.

I'll bite... What's so wrong about a scope on a lever action rifle?

(Yes, I have one. A nice little 1.5X scope that makes it a bit easier for old eyes....)

Absolutely mothing.... Here in PA antler restrictions were simple a while back. Now the need to determine if it is a 6 pointer(8 pointer in western counties), or spike less than 3 inch, make a scope necessary. My number one peeve is when somebody with a hubble telescope on their bolt thinks my lever should (have)iron sights.... as if we need to ID different targets...

it looks unnatural to my eyes and I would never put a scope on a lever. it always distresses me to see a nice lever gun, especially a collectible, with a scope. but, I know there are people out there who have visual limitations so I can see why a scope might be necessary for those folks

If I was hunting with a handgun, I would probably want a scope. I think handguns look better without scopes, but it depends what they are used for.

I had this Elcan Digital Day Night Hunter on my FN FS2000.

Was too much so replaced it with this Redfield Multi Dot and MBUS sights.
Looks and handles a lot better now.

I used to feel this same way about optics being out of place. Anymore I feel if the setup is practical for the user it's ok long as it's not cheap optics on a good rifle. I always cringe when I see a 10FP, 700P, Browning X-Bolt etc with a Walmart Tasco scope.

Doesn't matter if your firearm is $300 or $3000; a failed optic will ruin your day!

I think anyone can spend their money and do what they want with their guns. Yeah, sometimes we can guffaw at others' excessiveness. Some of us do just have bad eyes, though.

The only time I look sort of sideways at an optic is when someone puts poor quality on a good quality gun. IE:

I spent $1000 on my rifle but saved by putting a chinese NCstar scope on it. Why??????
Really sort of drives me nuts.

Well since you have bad eyesight maybe you can't see how hideous a scope on a lever looks. And the problem may be self perpetuating as looking at it may be harmful to your eyesight.
as if we need to ID different targets
Of course you could get some good binoculars then you wouldn't be pointing a gun at everything you want to look at:rolleyes:

I'll agree with several others, I prefer levers be unscoped. They just don't look right. The stocks are not designed for scope useage either. And despite conventional wisdom lever actions are not particularly light.

My Marlin 30-30 weighs exactly the same as my 300 mag. The Marlin, unscoped, weighs more than my 308's with a scopes on them. By as much as 2 lbs heavier. Once you put a scope on a lever you end up with a very heavy, poorly balanced awkward handling rifle that is difficult to use because of the stock design.

On the other hand optics greatly improve your ablity to hit, even at close range. Especially in the poor light of thick woods where levers are typically used. If someone is going to use optics on a levergun then the small lightweight 1-4X scopes or 2-7 at a max are probabably the best compromise. Nothing worse than seeing a lever with a 4-12X50mm scope on it in extra high see-through mounts.
