Optics for AR-15?

I am picking up an AR tomorrow, and I am trying to do some research on what would be the best optics for a bit of distance, it comes with a JP super match barrel, so it has a fair amount of reach, I would like to be able to comfortably reach 300-400 yds (maybe a little bit more since our local range reaches 600 yds.) my main concerns are:
-what kind of magnification should i look at?
-what gives me the best bang for the buck?
-what is the best mount?

I am also looking at putting a small red dot either mounted on the scope, or at a 45 to the scope for short range.

I have looked at the:
-trijicon ACOGs (a bit pricey)
-trijicon accupoint 3-9 or 2.5-10
-leupold mark 4 CQ/t 1-3x
-leupold mark AR 3-9x or 4-12x
-leupold mark 4 LR/T 3.5-10x
-KonusPro M30 3-12

I am open to any other suggestions...

For target shooting to 600 yards (a Type III application) a Leupold 3-8, 2-8, or similar with target knobs, in a LaRue mount, would be a good choice.

I have a compact 4x32 Simmons that I use out to 250yds. I have never gone father than that with the set up so I am unsure how it would work?

Zak's Articles ar excellent reading. You'll need to decide what you will be usning your rilfe for before deciding on which optic will help you achive that goal.

Hard to beat the Leupold MKIV, any model, but the 4x12 is plenty. THen you have to decide if you want the front focal plain and illum reticle. If you decide to go with one of those, let me know what model. Might be able to get a decent price for you.....i'm in the same club you are in.....

I tried then all...

I would be tempted to get flip ups, then take out the standard front sight, go with a smaller one, maybe fibre optic, the same ones the competition guys use.....

You might consider the Aimpoint Micro. There are 3 models, of which two appear very similar (R-1 and H-1)and the different one is the T-1 variant that is a bit more water resistant and has an IR dot for NV gear as well.

I have them on two AR15s and one Marlin 1895 in .45-70 and am quite pleased with them.

ACOG is what i use on my M4. It was worth every penny. If you're lucky like me, you can find one (SOPMOD model) on ebay barely used for like $600

ACOGs are indeed wonderful, if you want magnification. I have been very pleased with them as well. If you can find one in good shape for $600, then you have a bargain!
