Optic mounting on a 1911

I am contemplating purchasing a 1911A1 pattern pistol with the intention of using it for bullseye shooting. To that end, I plan to mount a red dot sight on it. Rather than resort to drilling and tapping the frame to install a mount, I would like to know if a Picatinny rail optic mount exists for those semiauto which have a Picatinny rail (Springfield's "Operators" and the P220ST come to mind). I have, as yet, been unable to find such a product.

Thanks for the link, Railroader! Does the mount interfere with an ambi safety? I'm one of those (un)lucky 10%, a southpaw :)

If you go to www.brownells.com, I believe you can see both a right and left hand version of the same idea. If the right stock replacement prevents the use of your ambi safety, perhaps the left side mount would not.

I had a similar question on the Kimber forum a while back, there was a poster named "rstark" that posted some pics and good info on the ambi and the grip-based rail.

Hope the link works, it appears that the Kimber forum is asking for an ID these days but hard to tell since I've switched computers. Hope this helps!

P.s.: I ended up installing the sight on my revo, then buying another ATN sight and a few more revos, so I can't comment further... ;)
