I understand in the wake of yesterday's tragedy at the elementary school in Connecticut that there is an uproar for some type of change, any type of change, regarding firearm regulations. I get that, and I agree with it
whole-heartedly. There needs to be change, absolutely.
I am okay for stricter regulations if it means keeping weapons out of the hands of potentially dangerous people. I get that, agree with it, sure. However, in this case yesterday, this young man took his MOTHER'S weapons, who had every right to possess them, murdered her, and then drove down to this school and used them to commit these unfathomable acts upon these poor innoncent teachers and children. No stricter gun law could have prevented that.
But I'll tell you what just may have HELPED to prevent the end results. Instead of putting so many restrictions in place of where you can carry your firearms and where you cannot, why not just allow people who are permitted to carry their firearms legally the right to do just that, carry them at all times. If these teachers in these schools had had concealed weapons on them, if this principal had a concealed weapon on her, this school psychologist, this janitor who was warning people, well, then maybe they would have had a chance to combat this situation before nearly 30 people's lives were taken from them. THAT to me makes MUCH more sense than passing regulations and laws to take away your right to protect yourself even further.
What if all teachers, who are put in the position of safeguarding our most precious commodities in this world, our children, were required to learn firearm safety and training as part of their jobs and required to conceal carry? Then perhaps events like yesterday's don't have such a bad ending ultimately.
But it's just not about teachers. Every time we go to a restaurant, the post office, or certain other public venues, we must leave our firearms in our vehicles, and that right there makes us susceptible to the evils twisted individual. When I first learned of yesterday's shooting, I was in a restaurant with my wife having lunch and doing some Christmas shopping. Of course, my firearm was in my vehicle as I AM a law obeying citizen like most people that carry. By doing so, however, I have to walk from the car across the parking lot to the restaurant and back. I have to sit in the restaurant full of people with the only line of defense initially a teenaged hostess, a bartender, a waitress, a steak knife? Clearly, and sadly, we are not safe anywhere, and recent events are making this all the more clear. Our children are not safe going to school. We are not safe going to malls, the movies, restaurants, anywhere. The world is a much different place.
I am for reform, absolutely, whatever it takes to end these senseless tragedies that we are starting to see on a weekly basis it seems anymore. Make laws to keep the guns out of the "bad guys" the best you can, fine, and see if you can come up with one that makes sense for everyone. But it makes absolutely no sense to limit even further the ways in which we're entitled to protect ourselves. If you want to make a real difference, allow us more freedom to protect ourselves if you're not going to be able to do it for us. Now THAT would be change that would make sense.
