Opinions wanted on model Sig 229.

I've been looking to purchase another handgun for ccw porposes. I went with a friend of mine to some sporting goods stores so he could look at a compound bow he wants to buy for deer hunting.

While at this one store; i was talking with a salesman that i knew from another store he had worked previously. I asked him if he had an H&K usp [compact model] in 357 sig. He replied that no he did not but said he had one i might be interested in... :)

He got out a model 229 Sig in 357 sig. The previous owner was a peace officer, and used this as a back up duty weapon. This weapon appeared to be in excellent shape, and comes with 1 - 13 round magazine. It's pretty much a factory weapon with no frills.

Now, if i want this gun i'll have to trade one of my others to make up the balance.. That would be my Glock model 20, this weapon has 3 - 15 rounds clips, Hienie night sites, Springco recoil reducer intstalled. This weapon has @ 1500 rounds shot from it.

This gun [Sig] is used and the asking price is 569.00$. I really like my Glock but it's pretty hard to carry concealed... :(

Any opinions out there concerning Sig Sauer pistols in general? I have heard that they are very good weapons and area little pricey. I went to Guns America a checked the prices on similiar models and this price on this particular model [used] does not seem to be out of line.

Thanks very much for any replies or suggestions members might have on this gun or caliber for that matter.

I had one in .40 S&W.

It was not very ergonomic for me, as the ambi decocker was hard to use without shifting my grip so as not to interfer with the right side lever.

The bore axis is higher above the hand than it needs to be, IMO, and contributes to increased muzzle flip.

The pistol was accurate, but uncomfortable in my hand. I sold it and don't miss it.

Probably my favorite Sig. Very accurate, reliable, and ergonomic. If you get it in .40 or .357Sig, you can get a 9mm barrel from barsto so you can have 3 calibers in one.

Sigs are pricey but to me they're worth it. Also, I see Glocks, Berettas, and H&K's close in price to Sigs so Sigs aren't the only top dollar guns out there; however, that can all depend on the prices in your area.

As much as I like Sigs, I wouldn't trade the Glock for one, and I'm not even a Glock fan; not a fan of trading guns. You'll lose money as it sounds like you put a lot into the 20, and the standard cap mags you have are hard to come by.

The price you listed for the P229 is okay depending on how used it is. The standard mag should be 12 rounds, make sure it's factory. 12 round mags are expensive for this model, the 10 rounders work fine, though. Gunsamerica prices are usually high on everything.

On thing to keep in mind, though, the gun is pretty thick. The slide is pretty massive and may not conceal as nicely as you want. So, you might want to try it out.

Don't sell the Glock 20, if you need something more compact try the glock 29. You can buy aftermarket barrels in 40 cal and 357 sig if that is what you are looking for.

I have a Sig 229 with .40 S&W and 357 Sig barrells. It is a very nice gun, and very ergonomic in my hand, but I no longer use it, due to the DA/SA trigger pull change between the first and subsequent shots. 12-34hom, have you tried shooting a gun with the DA/SA setup? You may or may not like it, and I would definitely try it or one like it before buying it.

I bought a Sig 229 in 40s&w a few weeks ago. Mine has less than 50 rounds shot through it. I paid 500 bucks for it and it is in excellent condition. I have a few other guns and I can tell you that the Sig seems to be the gun with the best quality. Now, I haven't shot it yet, but I am looking forward to trying it out. I'd go for the Sig if I were you....

12-34hom.....I've had a 229 in .40 for several years now. Don't have any hi-cap mags for it, but I don't feel under guned with 4 10 rounders. It's very accurate. I installed Hogue grips and that tamed the muzzel rize just a tad. It does recoil more than my Browning HP in .40. The 229 is very easy to feld strip and clean. Only negative thing I can think of is a high bore axis. I have a BS2 holster for it from M/D leather, makes a nice carry out fit for cooler weather. As for trading your Glock; I don't think I would do it. Buy the Sig if there is any way. Sounds like you have some change in the Glock. Shoot Safe....CO

Keep your Glock. You'll lose more than you'll gain.

The P229 is an excellent pistol. I'm wondering about the 13 rounds mag you mention. This can't be a preban as the 357SIG came out after the ban. Is it a .40 preban mag or is it a LEO mag?

can you conceal the Glock 29? it will take the 20s 15rd mags in addition to the factory 10rd'ers. Your mags are worth up to $100 easily- depending upon condition, generation...

can't comment on the p229. I had one nib .40 w/ 2 12rd mags---- stolen from my home back in '97. bought a safe shortly thereafter.

The introduction (or manufacture) of the SIG P229 in 357 SIG actually preceeded the ban, although not by much. I purchased a NIB P229 in '98 that came with a factory 12 round magazine, marked for .40 and .357 ammunition. The hi-caps are out there, but are expensive. SGN occasionally prints ads listing factory 12 round magazines, ususally priced at $75-100. My SIG was very accurate and recoil was mild. Muzzle flash was quite evident even in bright light. Alas, I let it go after being lured once again, kicking and screaming, into the 1911 abyss.

As usually the fine members of this board have enlightened with their knowledge. Yes, there are preban 357SIG mags marked as Vanfunk states.

If concealability is the issue, then you may want to consider a P239 or a P225. Both shoot as well as the P229,IMHO.

I have a 229 in .40. While it's a nice gun, I'd stick with the G20.

As stated above, there are factory hi-caps. 9mm hi caps are 13 rounds, while .40 and .357 hi caps hold 12. The .40 and .357 mags are actually the same, and are marked ".40/.357". They usually run around 75-100 bucks.

The 229 is a nice gun, but heavier and bulkier than other competitors, particularly those with polymer frames (ie, USP, P99, G23). In my opinion, it's also a little "prissier". I find that it chips and scratches a little easier than most. It does shoot real nice, though.

My advice: Keep the G20. It's a great gun. It's not that much bigger than the 229. It's not like you're going to a PPK or something you can throw in a pocket or in an ankle holster. Also, start saving for your next gun; you'll take bath in this trade.

The P229 that I have is the most accurate pistol I own next to my customized Colt Gold Cup. I have both the .357 SIG and .40 S&W barrels. I would say from a rest with my gun the .357 Sig is more accurate than the .40. I really like mine and would highly recommend it to anyone who wanted a accurate, reliable, pistol.

I had a P-229 in .40 and it was a great pistol, but as a carry piece I would opt for the Glock for a number of reasons: Corrosion resistance, less bulky, consistent trigger pull.

The P-229 is my favorite Sig of them all. I like the .40 S&W

I own 3 SIGs including the 229 in .357, and I have to say whatever you do DO NOT trade your Glock. The 229 you are looking at is priced a little on the high side, and if the shop wants your G20 with 3 high caps and other add ons plus cash... Well run (don't walk) away from there.
I like Glocks, but love SIGs and even I know what the current market price for used Glocks is. If you have to sell your Glock to get the 229, do it as a private sale then go buy the SIG or H&K.
BTW I handled a USPC .357, and it made me want to trade in my 239 .357, seems like a nice piece.

The P229 is a great pistol. Mine is in .40 cal rather than .357. Fits my hand beautifully only I did have the short trigger fitted so my short fingers could get to the DA trigger more easily. Hogue rubber grips feel great as well if you aren't going to carry it, I have the Crimson Trace laser grips on mine.

The problem I have is with the price. It is a used gun and $569 is too much. I see them used for under $500, I paid $500 for mine and that included the short trigger installed and the Hogue grips. Dr Avery sells the gun NIB for $599 and less at gun shows so I know you could get a better deal than that. The full caps are not an issue for you either as you are eligible for the specially marked versions that the rest of us can't legally have.

Thank you to EVERYONE who replied to my questions.

I have decided [from the responces i have recieved here] to keep my Glock and hold off buying the Sig until a later date.

JeffOTMG, i'll look for a better deal down in Tulsa if i make it to that gun show.
