Hi,

I'm trying to compare the following:
  • beretta PT 92 FS
  • Walther PPQ
  • EAA Witness
  • CZ 75
  • Sig P320
  • Sig P226
  • HK VP40

without regard for the cost of these, which is the most accurate and reliable?
I'm mostly looking for full size semi-automatics and will use this for home
defense and recreational target shooting.

many thanks!

I don't think you could go wrong with ANY of the guns listed. It then boils down to which fits YOU the best. All of them are generally pretty accurate and reliable.

I dislike the SIG P226, but like other SIG models. (I've had three P226s... and never could get them to behave in my hands.) I don't like the Beretta, either, but others love it, and the two I've owned shot well.

You've listed both hammer-fired and striker-fired guns, metal and polymer-framed guns, as well as compact and full-sized guns (the "compact" version of the P320 holds 15 rounds of 9mm, but is much smaller than the Beretta 92).

The H&K VP9, the CZ P-07, and the Glock 19 arguably ought to be on the list, too.

I picked Walther PPQ (button mag release)...today.... but almost a tie with Sig P226.
I have not tried the HK VP and the Sig P320. The rest are all good pistols.

1. Decide what the higher purpose is (casual target or defense)
- when defense, I like simple operation like that of the Walther PPQ.
- when target, just about anything would work but I prefer SAO for short consistent trigger and all steel for recoil control.

2. Think of how you plan to keep the pistol when it is being used for home defense (see if features work for you).
- will it be mag out, empty chamber?
- will it be 1 in chamber?
- will it be 1 in chamber, cocked and locked (CZ and EAA)?
- If you plan to keep pistol loaded, I recommend keeping it in a holster which covers the trigger.

3. How does it fit in your hand (proper grip + proper trigger finger reach/placement)?

Enjoy Shopping!

Which ones have you held and or shot? What I tell everyone is go hold the ones your interested in see which feels best. Out of those choose like three, and shoot them. The one that feels the best and shoots the best. Is the one that comes home with you. I like the PPQ maybe the best trigger out of the box with the shortest reset.

SIG P226.

Mine has approximately 10,000 rounds through it. 2,000 of those rounds were torture tested with swamp water / muck. Immaculate firearm. Been with me for 7 years and never has had any issues whatsoever. Smoothest shooting 9mm I've even fired. The bore axis is a moot point when it comes to a SIG in 9mm with full rails.

These days I still carry it along with my P229. They're two of my favorite fires on this planet. :D

Among that list, I would expect the PPQ or P226 to be the most reliable options (which the CZ75 up there too), simply because they are the most proven designs (the PPQ simply being a version of the uber-reliable P99). Obviously the Beretta 92FS is a proven design as well, but is polarizing to many (usually due to size and misperceptions). Suggest you shoot one for yourself.

If you get a PPQ, be sure to try to track down the original paddle mag release "Classic" version. In addition to being a superior system, it will allow you to use inexpensive P99 and MR9 magazines. You may want to consider the P99 as well - IMHO it's Anti-Stress (AS) trigger is about perfect for the home defense use you describe.

In light of recent tests posted by MAC of the VP9 (admittedly of a sample of one) I'd have serious reservations about recommending it without seeing some further testing.

All great pistols. I've shot each of them except the VP40. If you prefer SA/DA the P226 (with SRT) or CZ75 would be my preference. The P229 would be my preference over the P226 though. Of the strikers, I REALLY like the P320. If my favorite Tupperware shooter. Nice trigger pull, short reset, accurate and modular. My PPQ-M1/40 is great too. Super accurate, superb trigger and scary short reset. It's a little more finicky about ammo though and only comes in a full-size model. The G17, well, it's a G17. Decent shooter with lots of aftermarket support.

I don't know much about the VP40. Mixed reviews. People either love them or don't.

Just check out the P320C in 40. You can buy a 357Sig barrel, uses the same slide and mags. Also, you can get conversion kits for for it in 45auto or 9mm.

Happy shopping! [emoji106]

I said the 226 .....its reliability and accuracy has been well documented...

but it isn't light years ahead of the others either...and ultimately it depends on what gun fits your hands the best ..and what controls ..and materials you like( poly, alloy, steel, etc..)...

A buddy wanted a 226 for yrs.../ finally bought one...turns out because he broke his thumb yrs ago, he can't reach the controls without moving his grip, so for him its a bad gun. I have another buddy that shoots both a 229 and a 226...and he has trouble trying to hit a 10" circle consistently at 7 - 10 yds...( its not the guns !! ).../ I shot his 226 last week - and put a 1 1/2" group of 10 shots at 10 yds with no problem...( he may have vision issues - and I know he has grip and technique or fundamental issues..../ and he doesn't listen very well ...not a bad guy / but not a great shooter...and now he's trying to sell both guns ..and go to something else...???)...

rent as many guns as you can ...figure out what suits you the best...evaluate the triggers ( how they break, and how they reset), evaluate width, weight, barrel length....and figure out what works for you...not what works best for me out of your list ( my primary gun isn't on your list )...but I have 226's that I like, just not my favorite for carry or range work.
