I have a chance to purchase this rifle, previously owned but un fired for $500. From the looks of it, it would seem to have all the makings of a tack driver. Does anyone out there know anything about these guns?

Thanks,

Bowser.

Not sure what model you're looking at, but I have a 77RL (lightweight) in .308. A tack driver it ain't, but it'll do the job. Bought it for around $440 new.

Bowser, around here, NC, I can get either the blued or stainless steel model new for $429, these also come with a set of Ruger rings. I have an old M77 with the tang mounted safety and factory heavy barrel in .308 and it's all I hunt with.

If you are looking at the Target model or the mannlicher stock (Inernational model, I think) then you would be getting a good deal. Otherwise I would say no, I can lay my hands on a NIB lightwieght 77 for $430 or so.

Bowser. It depends on the model. An International, yes. The standard 77 without iron sights, not really, unless you really want the gun. With sights, maybe. I had the standard rifle, without sights, and I loved it. Traded it off to a guy who did not like his International, because he felt he lost too much velocity due to the shorter barrel. You don't lose that much.
You did not say if the rifle was scoped. If so, that $500 would not be too out of line, depending on the scope.
If it was me, and I wanted it, I'd offer the guy $400. If he counter offers, offer to split the the difference and go $450. A lot of times, I'll ask the seller what his rock bottom price is, and end up with a good deal. I can't hurt to try.

I had a KM77MKII which is the bull barrel, even heavier stock model. It was very accurate, fun gun. I sold mine w/ Harris bip, Aetec scope and good sling for 550, I'd try to bring him down some on his bare gun price if this is the model you're eyeing. It takes Ruger rings only I believe, so make sure you get them.
