Opinions Re: Beretta 9mm Type M

What is the general opinion/observation regarding this gun. I know it is a single stack nine, but that is what I am looking for. Is it worth the investment.

For Me, I would say NO. I held an M Compact(single stack) next to the L Compact(double column) and could see/feel no difference in the circumference of the grip. If anything it felt "fatter." Both had the Beretta wood grips on them. Hope this helps.

Gun shops look at me like I have three eyes when I ask them if they have either a 92 Compact L Type M (single stack, 8 rd mag) or 92 Compact L (double stack, 13 rd mag)! I gave up the search quite awhile back because nobody knew what in the world I was even talking about. That feeling gets old.

I saw a great pic awhile back on the Interet - it compared the Compact L Type M with the wider Compact L, but looking up through the bottom of the pistols. IIRC, the single stack Compact L Type M had much thicker grips, which would likely account for "BigMike's" gut feel on dimensions. I wish I could recall where I saw it - sorry!

All together, a neat pistol I'm sure - but, I'm waiting for a better (IMHO) single stack 9mm that holds 8 round...

P.S. Maybe a 92/96 "Custom Carry?" Not exactly sure on the nomenclature, but it was along the same lines as the Compact L and an Elite or something? Can I get some help on this one, guys?!

My opinion FWIW the type M single stack is a bad idea on Beretta's part, and I love my two Berettas.
Even in the "Compact" series the Beretta 92 is a large pistol. Other than minimal recoil and longer sight radius it really has no advantage as a single stack.
One of my Berettas is a Custom Carry. It is based on the Compact and takes the 13 round non-neutered magazines. The Custom Carry II is the same pistol in a single stack and is limited to 8 rounds.
In short for the size go with the standard 92C or Custom Carry, a pistol that size should have the advantage of capacity.
If you truly want a single stack 9mm, recommend looking at the Sig P225 or P239.
Take Care

So it seems the natural follow-on question is: can thinner grips be obtained for a Type M? Can I buy thin grip panels for a double stack 92 series (compact I suppose) and just add them to a Type M? I ask since I too have looked at the Type M (I've got a thing for 9mm single stacks also).

Everyone has an opinion...

I like my type M Berettas. They have been as accurate, reliable, and overall as good as the other Beretta pistols. I felt that the grip on Sig's 239 was too small for my hands and the type M grip fits just fine. Also like the longer barrel. Yes, I own hi-cap pistols, but as a general carry gun stoked with 9 rounds of Speer 124gr +p GD these guns work for me. If I know that things will get sticky, the 870 stuffed with slugs comes out to play. ;)

I assume that the Custom Carry II is based on the gun, since I have never seen a Model L type M in person.

I can say the Custom Carry II is about as thick as a 1911. I don't see why this is a bad idea, if you like the Kahr K9. If you are familiar with the Beretta, it has the same trigger and takedown lever. It offers one more round than the Kahr, while having a longer barrel. I don't find that having a longer barrel to affect concealment. The longer sight radius is welcome though.

If I were in the market for a CCW gun, I'd be fine with this choise.

Hello everyone. I had a type M 92 for a short time. It was a beautifully made pistol. I have small hands, and it fit me wonderfully, except the grip was a little short. It was very accurate, and had a double action pull like no other. I ended up selling it because I could not find magazines for it. Other than that, I would have kept it.

If you want a single stack 8rd 9mm, then may I suggest the HKP7M8, or the Walther P5. I think that the Walther is better, only because I don't like the squeeze cocker. But it is a good pistol!!!!

I searched for a long time in the Detroit area for a M model, and most stores have not a clue, often needing to be shown a picture from there own catalogs. Once found, I was disappointed that the perfect fitting (for myself) grip of an M-9/92fs did not carry-over with the smaller width and length of the M type, but if the full size is a bit on the large size, you may like it very well.
