Opinions on the S&W 1076

I've been wanting a non G20 10 for a while and I've got a line on a 1076. I'd be trading my Ruger Redhawk .41 mag for it.

What are your thoughts?

I've owned 2 or 3 1076s. All good, reliable, heavy duty 10mms capable of handling the real 10mm ammo without issue. That being said, I still prefer the 5" barreled guns, 1006,1026,etc, that have the advantage of greater slide mass and improved ballistics over the 4.25" guns........ymmv

I'd give up a Redhawk in a heartbeat for a 1076. I really like those S&W's and came within about a hundred bucks of getting one a while back.....but the negotiations stopped there.

BOTH of these guns score about equally high on the Difficult-to-Replace Index, which is one of my main factors for deciding when to sell.

I have had both but still have the 10mm..... either is a solid gun and will serve you well. Good luck with your decision.

I am a BIG fan of 10MM and shoot it out of a G29 regularly.

I'm not sure if it matters but the concept that a 10MM replicates a .41 Magnum is a myth IMO. The hottest 10MM loads compare to the lighter .41 Magnum loads but come nowhere near the hot .41s. The 10MM compares very well to the .357 when one considers the full spectrum of the rounds available.

Your mileage may vary and of course this might be a non issue to you as well.

Really the concept itself is more of a myth or 1/2 truth misquoted out of context. When the 10mm came out the compairison was to the 41 Magnums police loading of a 210 SWC @ 1150 fps since the 10mm was targeted toward law enforcement.
Of course people still believe that the FBI actually issued full power 10mm and downloaded it "after" they figured out it was too much to handle.:p

Thats what I believed. Is that not what happened?

I have the 1086 which is the same gun without the decocker. It is DAO and is built like a tank. If you like powerful rounds and want a gun built to take it then you won't be sorry. However, like the .41 Mag, if you don't reload, feeding it can be expensive. I believe the price will only go up as the years pass by so if you ever tire of it you'll get your money back, plus.

Nope if you can find a copy of Urey's 10mm notes it squares up many of the misconceptions in 10mm lore.
They knew going in that full house 10mm had too much blast and recoil and Urey's reduced power handloads were used in the official tests between 9mm,10mm and 45. The original contract for ammo was with Federal and had 180gr (IIRC sierra bullets were used) at 960fps. I bought a bunch of the brass and ammo in the early '90s.

larryh1108- what kinds of grips are those?

Also, neat gun – all of the DAO 10mm Smiths are uncommon to downright rare, and it seems like collector interest in them has really picked up.

Those are Hogue grips sold at the link below. They are really nice (but not cheap) grips. They really change the look of the gun and are top quality. I love steel and wood.

They only made 1660 of the 1086 pistols. They seem to go for the same $900-$1000 that the other 10XX guns go for. I don't think the sellers know how rare they are. All the 10s will go up in value over the years, IMO.

That is about the most poorly written letter I've read in a while, regardless of the accuracy of the production numbers.

I wouldn't trade a redhawk for one.
I'm lukewarm on my 1076, and wouldn't buy it again, but wouldn't sell it unless I absolutely had to. Even though I never shoot it.
A gun has to hurt me pretty bad to make me sell her, and I usually miss her afterwards. Even the ones that aren't so good.
I have one sitting next to my bed for at least 5 years, and I only shot it once or twice. Meh.
Yellow follower mags aren't reliable. Mine has all white follower mags.
Magazines are REALLY overpriced.
The gun flips up way more than a Glock, despite the fact that it's heavier.
The grip isn't that comfortable, made of hard plastic, and just feels like a piece of lumber in my hand.
My Glock outshoots it easily. As does my razorback. And my CBOB. And my 610. And almost everything else.
It really doesn't do anything better than the glock...except that it isn't a glock.
