Opinions on stipple work

Hello all I would like to hear some feed back about this stipple work please.

Good or bad. or Suggestions on techniques and patterns to try.

This is the original stipple job. It turned out this wasn't grippy enough. More grippy then factory but not what they wanted.

On the bottom right you can see the original grip texture.

Then the right.

This is the final job for the XD. went with much deeper on the panels and a similar texture to the original panels on the rest of the frame.

WIP but I think the texture is clearer in this one.

Trigger Guard
My least favorite is the golf ball on the front and backstrap. I tried it due to the checkering on the regular XD frame because if it didn't work i would've had to sand it down to get a good surface anyway. Owner turned out to like it and it stayed. I'd like to get it to look a bit better looking overall. I tried to keep the frame to look as stock as possible.

Finally this is a M&P Shield that I worked on. Owner had a fullsized M&P he liked but with his large hands he wanted a bit more traction on the small shield grip. So i went with a shallow stipple and then ran some sandpaper over the top to round off some of the edges to allow more comfortable carry surface.

I like this last one because he included the factory backstrap from his m&p for comparison. Again i try keeping them as factory looking as possible while making them a bit more grippy.

Next project is going to be reshaping a glock or kahr depending on what deal i come across first.

Good job. I really like how the Shield turned out. The XD would be a bit much for me, but if the owner liked it, that's great.

Very cleanly executed work; particularly impressed with how closely you were able to follow that factory pattern on the M&P.

I am usually not a fan of stippling, but I really like how the shield turned out. I like the xd as well, but don't really like the trigger guard part, the lines look a little weird. the shield has me tempted to do my pt111 when it gets here next week. I would likely screw it up though. that's one tedious profression your getting into, I hope you charge a bunch

I'm not a fan of stippling either, probably because most of the homegrown stippling jobs I've seen looked too amateurish. But I agree with what others say about the M&P Shield. Nice job.

Your work is extremely tidy, congrats! I've found I prefer grip tape or Talon grips to stippling. If I get tired of either of those I can always take them off, stippling not so much.

Yeah the bottom half of the trigger guard had 3 lines sticking out like some quasi checkering in the same pattern as the factory front and back strap. to me it looked really strange after the whole gun was stippled so i just sort of removed them with a light stipple to match the rest of the gun. I was going to do the whole trigger guard but I wanted to make sure the owner liked it first. He was indifferent to it so it just stayed as is.

I can always take them off, stippling not so much

yes indeed i stress this to them when they decide they want it. Hence the first stipple of the XD and then the 2nd stipple.

'I can always add more but I can never take away.'

I would rather take the time to do it over or add more later then over stipple something and have them unhappy with it. I've also done some knives, axes, Poly mags stocks and fore ends etc. Olive and black stipple well Tan is harder because if you leave it in the poly to long it turns burnt brown.

I hoping to find a glock that looks like this. Pick it up for a steal and see what I can do to save it.

Ouch... I think that would be a good project.:D

I'm not a huge fan of most of the stippling that I've seen, just because it looks amateurish*. This, however, is some good-looking work. Well done.

* = (I'm reminded of a phrase used in a Patrick McManus book: ". . . made by some local fiend with his own three hands . . . ")

Ouch is right. :)

I wouldn't think that would be to hard to fix though.

I prefer the finer "cat tongue" feel. Its as fine or finer than a lot of the skateboard/grip tape, and its a lot easier to get what you want as far as coverage.

I used tape on most things until I stippled my first Glock, and then that was the end of it. Stippling is just far superior to anything tape wise.

It looks a little high on the sides of the XD for my liking. The texture and technique look awesome other wise on the XD and about perfect on the Shield. Great work!

Venom I think your stippling looks good. Are you using a dremel tool with a burr bit to do that? That seems like what I remember reading. That poor gun in post 13 looks like someone took a hot wire to it. Or maybe a round tip in a soldering gun. Yuk!

Thanks for all the kind words and critiques. It has me eager for another project if anyone is interested in getting anything done please let me know.

I figured tfl would be a good place to get quality opinions even if they stung. we know whats good and what we like. ;)

Wood burning kit with lots of tips for options...

I kinda hate stippling, as most of it looks like crap,
but I do love using it to make artistic designs...
Adding Trinity Knot's and other Irish motif's are my bad habit...

Best thing about using the woodburning kit is that you can practice on wood until you get good ;)

AK103K, what tip did you use for the Cat Tongue stipple? I like that :)
