Opinions on Springfield 1911 in 9mm

Was at the pistol range this morning, just me and one other club member. I had a number of SIGs, and he had a variety of Kimber and Springfield 1911s. We got to talking and he commented that he had never fired a SIG 220. In return, I got to try out some of his pistols, including a Springfield Ultra Compact in 9mm. I was really surprised by how much I liked it. Very thin, and virtually no recoil. Plus, the super short length of the single action trigger pull made follow-up shots a breeze.

What's the general consensus of 1911s chambered in non-45 calibers --- and most specifically in 9mm? Although I've got the concealed carry arena well covered with the SIG 225 and 239, this 8+1 pistol seemed like it too would make a good ccw choice. Could be an inexpensive-to-shoot practice gun for those that own other 1911 pistols, I would imagine. Anything to watch out for or be aware of?

My local shop has a NIB stainless version with rosewood grips for $610. Thoughts?

Thanks and take care. Marko

I am also interested in a Springfield 9mm, so I'll be watching this thread closely. In my case, I am looking for a full sized model though...

I've got a pair of Colt STS Commanders in 9mm and they are a dream to shoot. I've also had a 9mm full size Springfield for ages, checking my logbooks for this post I have fired 14,591 rounds to date with only 2 malfunctions at rounds 8,788/9 and this was traced to the aftermarket mags that I had picked up at the local gunshow the previous Sunday. I now use Pachmyer sts mags exclusively and their has been no other problems. I recently purchased a Springfield full size "loaded" 9mm in parkerized finish and as of today it has 3,719 rounds of Federal FMJ-FP loads with NOT A ONE malfunction of any type. I did notice however that the factory magazine sometimes fails to lock the slide back on the last round but after I replaced the mag springs with heavy duty ones the problem dissapeared.

I am not sure and I would have to re-check, but a local shop had two Springfield full size 9mm's in stock... I BELIEVE for $450 each but I could be mistaken. This is in Cincinnati, Ohio.

I took my brand-spankin' new Springfield "loaded" 9mm to the range today. Unfortunately, I couldn't fire a single shot without the casing getting stuck in the chamber. I tried different ammo, different mags, and different shooters. Upon inspection, I noticed that the spent cases were scratched up pretty badly.

I called Springfield customer service and they were very helpful. They told me to send the gun in for repair and they even provided me with their UPS account number so I wouldn't have to pay for shipping. This is the first gun I've ever purchased - needless to say I'm very disappointed. :( However, I'm hoping Springfield will return it to me quickly and all fixed-up.
