Opinions on S&W 459 Pistol

I recently came by an S&W Model 459, in excellent condition, that a friend of mine is selling for $200.00. I am generally a revolver fan, but have owned Glocks in the past. I am quite taken with this gun and its classic appearance (as well as the comfortable fit in my hand) and was wondering what the general consensus is regarding the quality, durability, reliability of this pistol in particular. I am sort of suspect of S&W autos in general. I am a firearms officer for a federal agency which used to issue S&W 6906s which had alot of problems. I was wondering if the quality/reliability of this second generation 459 might actually be better than the third generation 6906. Any opinions or information at all about the 459 would be greatly appreciated and thank you in advance for your help

Howdy!

Never had a 459 but I did have the 659. I found
the pistol pleasant to fire and 100% reliable IF
it was cleaned every 250 rounds. Past that I had
to at least wipe down the feed ramp and throw
some lube on the rails. I think the 3rd generation
*&* autos are better thought of but I didn't mind
the 2nd generation. If the 459 grip fits you and
you don't mind the trigger - go for it. I think
you'll like it!

Greeting's Folk's,

In the past I have owned a Smith & Wesson model 459.
I used it for a couple of years before moving on to some
thing else. I can't recall ever experiencing a problem of
any kind with this weapon. Except for the fact that it
was rather large for my requirement's; it was truly an
exceptional pistol, and it being a 2nd generation off
spring it should rank right behind the S&W model 39-2
in quality. Sorry for rambling, but this is my true up to
the minute experience with this fine firearm.

Being a 20 year veteran LEO myself, I wouldn't hesitate
to use the S&W 459 as a duty weapon.

Best Wishes,

I had one a few years ago. Far from perfect, but worth $200 anyway. Mine had a horrible trigger. Everyone I let shoot it would squeeze the trigger for a second, then stop and see it the safety was on or something. Feed reliability was great, accuracy was acceptable, made worse by the trigger. Excellent adjustable rear sight. The alloy frame made it muzzle flip noticibly more than the Hi Power I have now.
