Opinions on my letter to the editor "Gun Buy Backs"

This is a letter I just submitted to the Tampa Tribune, let me hear any opinions:

Under the masquerade of public safety the gun turn in programs are ripping off our society, especially our seniors by a campaign of lies and scare tactics. Individuals are giving away valuable investments and family heirlooms for a political scam that is nothing more then symbolism over substance. The September 17th Tampa Tribune reported that in the program one historical WW2 gun worth around $6,000 was traded for a $50 coupon. Shame on the Deputies who accepted this gun as part of their program, they probably laughed at the naivety of the individual. Why didn’t they tell them to take it to a dealer and get paid for their antique? Is there anyone who really believes this gun would ever be bought by a criminal and used in a crime? It would end up in a museum or the safe of a collector of war relics. Hillsborough County Sheriff Cal Henderson stated that this piece of history would be destroyed along with the others. I wonder if it ever crossed his mind that the person who gave up this gun could have used the $6,000 to pay off their car, get a much needed operation or put their kid through college? How many other legally owned guns which have historical or collector value were traded for the token amount of a $50 gift certificate? Guns have traditionally been collected for their enduring investment value, their worth increasing as the years go by. How many widows faced with liquidating their deceased husbands effects could be giving up generations of investments in the name of political correctness. For individuals who just don’t want any weapons in their homes there is an alternative, take them to a reputable gun dealer and have him check the book value for you. You just may be surprised at the history and value of your firearms.

Looks good to me. Hard to get it all said when they have such a short attention span.

Nikita Khrushchev predicted confidently in a speech in Bucharest, Rumania on June 19, 1962 that: " The United States will eventually fly the Communist Red Flag...the American people will hoist it themselves."

I thought something like this was "illegal". To scam someone out of money by offering little of what the object is worth while KNOWING (the scammer) the true value... or does this just apply to Us and not Them? I'm probably wrong about it being illegal but then again, with 20,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 laws/statues/ordinances/EO's/charters (I could go on and on, and on but I won't) you never know.

But, to lay blame on just the deputies is wrong. The so called "owner" probably got the gun from his/her father who probably got it from his/her father and didn't think that some idiot would turn it in for such a poulty sum. It's about the same as giving your kids your most vaulable items and they go off and pawn them for 1/25th of what they are worth. This world probably would be a utopia if we could just get rid of the idiots, the politicians, and the lawyers (whom usually become politicians). But you won't ever get rid of the idiots because the lawyers and the politicians need them to gain the riches or the votes. GEEZ!

I thought it was good to approach it from the "ripping off the seniors" standpoint.

And a good point to bring up the "get it evaluated first". A potential Public Service the paper could do.

Of course if the Tampa Trib is one of those "if it just gets one gun off the street" types, it will bounce off them.

Do you have a copy of the article? You have to pay to get anything from their archives.

Oatka,
I have the article at work, I will scan it and send ya a copy. Thanks for the replys, now if only they will print it! The Tribune is the most conservitive paper in the area ( at least since Col. Dan Daniels the former Polk County Sheriff stopped printing The Eagle)and I have had at least 5 prior letters featured. BTW has anyone ever asked about the name "Gun Buy Back Program"? Don't you have to have once been the owner of something to be able to "Buy it back"? Since manufactures can only sell to FFL dealers and these guns are then sold to the public then one would assume only gun dealers could be involved in a "Buy Back", not police, deputies, civic organizations etc.....
