Opinions on Cabelas 1858 Remingtons.

Hey all I am wondering if any of you have any experience with the Remington 1858 repros from Cabelas. I am thinking of getting one and using a drop in conversion cylinder in 45LC in it. I especially like the one that has the "antique" finish on it.

Thanks

I own one of the 1858's from Cabela's, however I purchased mine 8-9 years ago, so I have no Idea if they are still made by the same manufacturer. I had no idea that you could use a drop in .45lc cylinder on them. I assume that you would have to fire Black powder loaded cases. Correct me if I am wrong. I loved it, unfortunately I did not clean it the last time I took it out shooting, and it rusted shut. I cannot remove the cylinder anymore, nor will it rotate. The dowel that it is on is firmly welded in place. When trying to knock the dowel (or what ever it is called) out, I managed to break off the end piece; the part you would normally pull on to remove the cylinder. Ah well, some lessons have to be learned the hard way. I guess it would look nice on the wall now. It was great before I destroyed it, just to let you know.

I think that the Italian made BP replicas from Cabelas are perfectly fine for their intended purpose. Their intended purpose, of course, is light shooting in the backyard 5% of the time... looking neat on the wall the other 95%.

If you plan on doing a lot of shooting, I'd spend a little more for something a bit stronger (the Lyman replicas are a step above and you can shoot the Ruger 1858 all day long). Definitely avoid any of the brass frame models as they don't take heat very well and tend to bind up. I also have a difficult time seeing how any of these cheaper replicas could handle a .45LC but I'm certainly no expert.

If you decide on one from Cabela's, I'd recommend replacing the nipples right away. The one's I've had have been very soft and tend to distort. They also seem to try to weld themselves into the cylinder making future replacement difficult (and who likes soft nipples anyway? ;)).

Whatever you decide, enjoy! These guns are a neat part of history that shouldn't be forgotten.
