Opinions on Aguila Ammo's .45 ACP Hi-Power?

I met a guy yesterday at the range that has started using these as a defensive load. Their web site says their Hi-Power round pushes a 117 gr. HP at 1450 fps for 546 ft-lbs at the muzzle. This seems like a pretty high velocity for a .45. Has anybody used them before?

BTW, here's their website:
www.aguilaammo.com

I haven't used them, but high-vell low-grain pre-frag rounds are my cup of tea.

I am aquiring a CZ-97. This ammunition will be the first tested.

Anybody making a CZ-97 drop-in barrel for Cor-Bon .400 yet?

Hello Rock_Jock! I fired a few of these through a buddie's Les Baer and my Kimber. They group about 3" @ 25 yards and have one heck of a muzzle blast.....but very little recoil. Expansion in informal tests showed that they reliably split into 3 pieces. Unfortunately, in both his Baer and my Kimber's slide stops would prematurely engage with this load. Best.

Forgive me for my ignorance, but why exactly did this happen? Is it because the ammo is loaded so light that the slide does not travel its full distance?

I saw this ammo at a dealer last weekend. He charges $30 for a box of 50 and they are 115 Grain. That has to be like a short, fat, 9mm. In my opinion, in a 45ACP, you are best off with that 230 Grain ball.

Go to www.greet.com and click on Calibers. read the .45ACP advocacy article which shuns these types of light loads for a .45ACP.

IMHO? Junk!

Fairly accurate. Splits into 3 pieces reliably. Does a number on wet phone books and water jugs. I still like RBCD better.

Hello, Rock_Jock. I don't know why the slide locked prematurely time after time on both guns. Perhaps the bullet somehow strikes the hold open or maybe it's the "timing" of the slide's movement or it's momentum and sharper impulse. I flat do not know. Best.

I purchased a couple of boxes of the stuff for testing..I found that the recoil impulse is very light and accuracy to be below average. Also the muzzle blossom from this round is incredible! I still have a box and will most likely use it to dispatch rabid phone books or water jugs.
The guy I purchased this ammunition from did some tests on sides of beef. When striking the side of beef it would cause a very shallow but very wide "wound". I'd guess the wound was only an inch deep but about three inches wide. Impressive, but I prefer a bit more penetration and decided to stick with the 185 grain gold dots for my Officer's ACP.

Phone Books, Water Jugs, Clay and Gel are useless... UNLESS your comparing one load against another.

Meat is the only medium that counts. Meat is just a bit more spendy...

Hey Mark are you going to the the gun show this weekend here in Orlando?

Thanks for the info Shawn. It seems like, based on your tests, this might be a pretty good defensive load. Maybe light on penetration, but with four fairly large projectiles covering such a large diameter, they are bound to hit at least one (probably several) vital organ(s).

Any sheep tests? (ha,ha)

Nice review Shawn. Good info. If they could tweak it so fragment 1* had 10"+ of penetration I`d be more impressed. Since the deepest penetration fragments are in the periphery it would seem that it almost penalized good shot placement. You could almost make a perfect center mass shot and damage nothing but lung. Triton Quickshoks seem to stay much closer together. I may pick up a box to try on grounhogs though. :D Marcus

Many on this thread are accomplished and experienced. From my humble perspective, I cannot see the merits of a bullet that penetrates less than some of the other offerings like the 185 gr. jhp, 200 gr. jhp or my favorite and the only .45 ACP load I carry, the 230 gr. jhp. I prefer a large diameter bullet that has the potential to penetrate more than 11" but hey I just a John Doe out here.

BTW, CTD sells those Aguila's for next to nothing. I am amused to see that some wise businessman is gouging people at $30.00 a pop.

Cobraman, Yup, I'll be there.. Planning on showing up when it opens on Saturday morning. I have to scout for a replacement for my Browning Buckmark. I recently gave my copy to my cousin/best man's son for his high school graduation..Wanna meet up? Mark / FL
