Depends. Both are found in 38 Special, some are heat treated and some aren't depending on when they were made, the same can be said for dropping one as the hammer block safety wasn't an issue until WWII and USN M&Ps were dropped and killed sailors, the care shown in manufacturing is far better in Colts. The S&W M&P can easily be stripped, parts of different revolvers and screws thrown in a heap and working revolvers reassembled without fitting. Colt revolvers required hand assembly, parts to be fitted and show the care of craftsmen in assembly. Both are good weapons and proven designs. Both were morphed into 357 Magnum revolvers. I prefer Colts for their smoothness and sleekness in aestheics. I have several M&Ps too. I enjoy shooting a M&P 38 Special with 5" barrel and round butt often. If you have a Colt Official Police, a S&W M&P is a nice contrast. I am lucky enough to have Colt and S&W revolvers. If you can find a unmolested M&P, purchase it. You will like it. I have 2" through 5" M&Ps and a WWII British Officer issue in 38 S&W NOT a so-called Victory model. All are stock with 0 changes or parts broken. If you have not guessed yet, I like my M&Ps but, I own and shoot Colt revolvers as well. The only thing I have ever had an issue with is the S&W M&Ps were built with tight chambers for a time. I have one that will only accept factory ammunition, reloads will not chamber as they are swollen.
