opinions needed on Marlin 60

Great little rifles. Easy to maintain, very reliable, and accurate as they need to be. My buddy Junior wrote them up at our website. LINKY HERE for an article about how to disassemble and maintain the little rifle.

One word of caution. If you're using a rod, you must clean from the muzzle. Make sure to not damage the crown or rifling. Other than that, they're wonderful little rifles.

I had one as a kid, it is still in use on my Dad's ranch. The older ones had a longer barrel which I think made them even more accurate. I used to shoot black birds with it to feed the cats. Shot them off power lines and only counted head shots. That rifle was as accurate as you could see to shoot with iron sights. I think the rifle is still that good but my eyes are not.:D

I have owned a couple, and they were alright, but the thing that I didnt like about them was that if they jammed it was hard to clear them.
I think I would prefer the Ruger, or a clip fed version of the model 60 for that reason. I have had to dig a Jam out of a few Model 60s over the years.

accurate, light, compact and handy little guns.

however. I had a m60 that was jammomatic with any bulk pack except for american eagle and federal boxes, premium ammo had to be some form of ATK like CCI or such. also, it was horribly hobbled when dirty, you had to clean it out every half a brick(500 rounds) or so. I always had to carry a can of remoil or some form of gun cleaner with me in case my gun was acting up in the field. despite these drawbacks I would still recommend them for a truck or 4wheeler gun, as long as you clean them often and dont use soft lead tip ammo you should be golden.

for $140 bucks brand new they are a hard gun to beat for price.

Some are reliable some are not. They are NOT easy to maintain compared to something like a 10-22.

I have owned a few of these over the years but I will never own another.

There are far too many better .22 autos out there for me to have to deal with their problems.

I have owned a Model 60 for over 10 years. It has been very reliable, and has only jammed a couple times when very dirty. Cleaning isn't too bad once you're familiar. Mine is very accurate, especially for its cost. Keep it clean and well oiled and you'll have no problems. I too think it is a hard to beat .22 for the money, though I'd also recommend an old Springfield/Savage 87A, a personal favorite in the same price range.

Love my little Model 60. I don't get the criticism that it's somehow hard to maintain or keep clean, because it isn't. The only thing you need to watch for is to make sure you protect the mag tube against severe dents and abuse - it's fairly thin steel and could become crimped if struck with enough force against a hard object. Aside from that, I can't think of any real criticism.

Oh, and just like most other 22's, it likes some ammo better than others. Mine seems to worship at the altar of CCI mini-mags.

marlin 60

Thanks for the help guys,
I bought one of these a couple of weeks ago but havent had a chance to to out and fire it.
I wanted to get as much input as possible from you all that are familiar with the characteristics and idiosyncrises.
I appreciate you taking the time to educate me.

I've had my marlin 60 for almost 20 years and the one thing I've learned is don't oil the inside action because it is more reliable dry. The only time my 60 has jammed is after I cleaned/oiled it (carbon mixes with oil and turns into a thick gunk) or if I shoot I think the 40 grain hi velocity Federal something or others.. The 550 federal brick never jams and shoots pretty accurately. I can hit coke cans at 75 yards all day long when I do my part.

If the action starts to get a little gritty, pull the stock off, pull the bolt out and wipe down with a dry cloth. Reassemble, and take back to the range to shoot some more.

Shot thousands upon thousands of rounds through my 60 as a kid. Only problems were caused by junk ammo. I beat the heck out of that thing and didn't take care of it at all.

It was amazingly accurate. Someone stole it out of my car when I was 16 along with another gun i loved my 983. Freakin thieves.

Don't have a Model 60 , but I do have an old 989M2 which is a carbine built on the same action.

Got it when I was 13 and have put many , many thousands or rounds thru it. Since 1960 Marlin has made over 11 million various model .22 semi-auto rifles and carbines based on the basic action. It doesn't have a bunch of bolt-on , tacticool wanna-be assualt rifle crap available for it like a Ruger 10-22. It is what it is , an accurate reliable inexpensive fun little plinker.

what about the quality

Older ones yes. The "new Marlins" no quality is NOT there. I have a 795 that is at best junk. In my opinion do yourself a favor and buy a Ruger 10/22. Plus down the road you will be able to do a vast amount of customizing to the Ruger if you should choose to do so. I regret buying the Marlin and not buying the Ruger
