I just got an itch for yet another toy,,,,err, rifle,
I have SKS and I love it for power and convenience(stripper clip fed), but I know it's not for HD purpose due to over penetration,
I am thinking about HD or short range(100 yds or 200) general purpose,(also WW III drum is rollng  )
I've never even handled lever action or 30-30, so need your opinionated opinion,

local big 5 has sale for
Winchester 1894 Ranger lever-action, .30-30, .357 Magnum, .44 Magnum or .45
Colt, $279.99
.357 or .44 would be convenient with same type revolver too,
any opinion if you have any of those?

With proper bullet selection, you have no more fear of overpen from 7.62x39mm, than any other rounds you listed. FMJ from practically ANY centerfire rifle (.223 excepted) will overpenetrate.

A slight advantage to the .30-30. Lightly-modified 16" Winchester M94 in .30-30 is my car gun. Weapon is flat and compact, but powerful enough for car doors and what I want to fight with over my pistol.

I prefer the 170 gr. SP over the short Russian FMJ, but I guess now you can get SPs for the CKC.

Buy both the M94 and the CKC and see what you like. "But, honey, I have to buy both! Some guy on the internet told me to."

For HD, stick to what you are used to. Lever actions have a different feel to me. I have a M94 3030 and a M64 (rifle 5rd tube) 32spl.

More than once I've caught myself reaching for the bolt handle instead of jacking the lever or searching for the safety instead of thumbing the hammer back. This is because my main hunting rifles are Rem M700 30.06 and 7mm08.

This would not be a good situation during a 'heat of the moment' Home Defense encounter.

My main HD weapon is my Rem 870 w/ 5 rds of 00buck!! I know the feel of this gun as soon as I pick it up and hopefully, if the situation ever arises, I won't be fumbling around w/ it.

Use what you are comfortable/familiar with and have your wife with a SIG 9mm as backup!!!!

John,

Not much difference ballistically between the 7.62x39 and the .30-30. Both are fine cartridges, but if in your position I would prefer to expand my collection. I'd go with the .44 mag. I have a Marlin 1894 in .44 that I've set up with a Lyman receiver sight. Very nice piece; complements the .44 revolver quite well. And everyone ought to have at least one lever action, and at least one .44 mag revolver in the arsenal (er, safe).

johnAK,

I never thought I'd have impure thoughts about a piece of plastic!

Thanks - I'll bill you for the therapy...
