Why is it that when I line up the sights on a pistol, shoot it from a sand bag and adjust the sights and get it to group shots right where I want it to, and then someone else walks up and shoots the same pistol it groups shots in a different spot? Don't the sights get lined up the same way? Does everyone's eye make it shoot different? Or is it lack of skills and skilled shooters are more consistant?

It may be trigger control or trigger finger placement. Try slidding your trigger finger a tad bit toward the direction you want your groups to go. If you are shooting right, (and are right handed) slide your trigger finger a bit further onto the trigger.

Different people, different sight settings. It's not just the sights, it also has to do with how the gun recoils, and since it is recoiling against a person, it will vary from one person to another.

old (but little recognised) fact

No two people look through the sights exactly the same way. What is spot on for you will not be for the next guy. Most of the time it will be close. Sometimes it will be way off.

And this applies to scopes as well. My father and I, using the same gun and ammo, with no change to the sight setting, and the same point of aim, would hit in different places. A close friend and I, using scoped rifles, trading back and forth for each shot found that we were exactly 1/2" (@100yds) apart because of the way we looked through the scopes. With different shooters, the difference can be more, or less.

No one can sight in a gun perfectly for someone else. Only you can do that for you. Someone else may get it very close for you, but only you can be certain it is right for you.

why?

I would say that the trigger pull has the most variable, however also the grip and then the eyes. Some people actually have no idea what a proper sight picture should look like.

I guess I'm among them. No one ever taught me the right way to acquire a sight picture. I just tried what I thought might work and when it did, I stuck with that.

I'm looking forward to going to a training program one day.
