This is obviously meant to those who live in a state that allows open carry although anyone's comments are welcome of course. What are your thoughts on open carry? Just asking for trouble? Dangerous? etc...

Mind you, I CC, I do not plan on open carry. I don't want anyone knowing I am carrying. I was just curious as to what others opinions are on this.

Mods, if this post is in the wrong forum, please move it.

Thanks!

I'm like you and don't want anyone to know I'm carrying. If I lived in a open carry state I'm sure I'd do it some just not my cup of tea.

I have a CCW so don't typically OC. I'd rather not draw attention to myself. The only time I have OC'd has been in the woods, camping, hiking, etc

I do live in an open carry state and I just really don't want the attention, neither from the public nor from police who don't know that open carry is not illegal.

"Open carry" to me means that I don't have to worry so much about accidental printing or exposure if my shirt happens to ride up a little.

Open carry to me would be the same as taking all the money out of your wallet and taping it to the outside of your shirt where everyone could see it. Why ask for trouble and give someone out to harm you the upper hand?

I like when people are protected from laws prohibiting printing or such and think open carry should be allowed, but gunowners should use some common sense when to open carry. Cabelas, sure, go in oc ing. Dont walk into toys r us with a desert eagle on your thigh. I know a few oc types and it seems there more concerned with making political statements than defending themselves, but when i hunt i oc and like that i can.

Time and place. I open carry on my property, but go concealed in town. Even though my town is very oc friendly. I wouldn't think of oc in Nashville or Knoxville. Why give morons a reason to harrass you?

SPUSG makes some good points. Don't go looking like Rambo and you'll get less crap. Heck, as a gun guy I'll still make fun a Rambo types so what do you think the cops, store managers and other civilians are gonna think and do?

I for the most part think we'd be better off if everybody open carried instead of CC. Right now the sheep out there are shocked by the sight of a gun so open carry folk are often frowned upon. But if all of us/you who carry a gun carried in the open people would stop noticeing as much. Let's face it, no one watches a western and is shocked to see a six shooter. But alas that's not the world we live in. Odds are if you open carry you're gonna get dirty looks in many areas, you may get crap from cops and stores will ask you to leave. More than likely your actions may also push people to the other side of the fence when it comes to gun control too. Think before you do it.

I cc and live in an open carry state. I'm glad I don't have to worry about my gun showing but OCing makes you look like a dork.

I would not open carry for one reason,,,

In this day and age,,,
It would draw attention to me,,,
I prefer the chameleon strategy for life.

It's kind of like what Willie told Joe:

"Tank corp ain't for me Joe,,,
A moving foxhole attracts the eye."

I like the concept of open carry. But it doesn't work well in today's society. For open carry to work well, a lot of people need to be doing it. Yes it gives the bad guy the upper hand, but if there are 14 people in the room open carrying, that will deter the crime from happening in the first place.

At the very least I like it as "printing insurance." But ultimately I dream of a world where everyone open carries.

i live in florida which is not a open carry state. i would like it to be. not so i could open carry, just so that if my gun is accidently exposed i would get in trouble(it is illegal if your concealed weapon accidently becomes not concealed). and second is that if it did become exposed it would freak out people as much as it would if it were a open carry state.

Most you are tracking with my thoughts; I do not see the value in OCing except on your own property, or while in the woods.

Anything other than that, IMHO, is generally for political statements, or to gain attention; of which I'm a fan of neither. But, if it's legal, to each his own.

Taurus4life; I too live in Florida, and the law allows for accidental exposure of your legally concealed weapon.

I'd hate to be you folks who have to be worried bout being 100% concealed, 100% of the time (or at least most of the time). It would make me leave the guns at home or only carry small, small, small. Me? I don't flaunt it but the heck if I'm gonna worry about someone catching a glance either. What a pain in the butt. If it's most of the way covered, most of the time, by a coat or a shirt it's good enough for me. If an inch or 2 of a holster shows or the butt prints on my side, so be it.

There's not that much to worry about. As others have mentioned elsewhere, you could be open carrying and not get noticed by most people. I conceal very well under just a t-shirt or polo but I don't worry if I need to kneel down to get a can off the bottom shelf or anything. No one is paying attention.

Open carry is legal here, but I am not a fan. I think people should have the right to do it, but I also have the right to park my car with all my windows down with the keys in and cover it with insulting bumper stickers. Having the right to do something doesn't make it a good idea.

Came to that realization Saturday when I was out for Halloween and had a plastic Mauser Broomhandle on my thigh. No one noticed 'til I pointed it out.

BTW: I was Han Solo:D, not a Nazi, but I did have a few people ask me if i was dressed as Michael Jackson:confused:. That's when I'd turn and show em the plastic blaster
