Open carry on the Bush campaign trail - Jeff Cooper

Here's a great bit of reporting from the latest Jeff Cooper's Commentaries. If you don't know who Jeff Cooper is, go to the site above, read the "about Jeff" section, and then start reading the entire Commentaries archive. It'll take you a little while, and will be well worth it, even if you don't agree with all of Jeff's wisdom.

quote:
Recently the governor of Texas treated us to a campaign presentation here in Prescott. It was a delight to us rednecks to note that a good many of the spectators were openly and legally armed - and that the Secret Service realized that here in Arizona this sort of thing is the way to go. We were charmed when the candidate announced loudly and clearly in regard to the forthcoming election that "Help is on the way."[/quote]

I'd love to know the reaction of the liberal press pool to this (common open carry).

I sure hope that it is. Get off your duffs and write checks / campaign / do something!

I love Col. Cooper! I subscribed to G&A only because of his columns. Most gun mags are just too broad in scope, or too technical for my simple mind. Colonel Cooper is pretty simple too, and his columns are excellent.
As far as doing something, I did. I woke up this morning at a rediculous 4:45 (rediculous when you routinely go to bed at 1:00AM) and wizzed off an e-mail to the good governor's campaign with solid advice:

QUIT BEING SUCH A PANSY AND START TO KICK SOME DEMOCRATIC A$$!!!

Really now. You know you're angry when you sacrifice sleep over this stuff. I'm a Libertarian, and it makes me mad to see him squander his campaign by responding to the Democrats. The press is biased? SO WHAT! They were biased against Reagan too. You just have to assume that when running as a conservative, you will not recieve much help from the Press. If I were Dubya, I'd be parading all the Democrats in the Texas legislature who have openly endorsed him. That is a HUGE deal. Then I'd NEVER back down from Dick Cheney's record on plastic guns, "cop-killer" bullets, or laser beam control.
It seems like lately if algore proposes something to spend my money on, Dubya does the same thing. This doesn't inspire my confidence. I have very little sympathy for someone who worked for 40 years, and never once thought about the future, and so now they want me to be burdened with their drugs. Makes me SICK SICK SICK! What makes me even more sick is the kind of morons who are my age and younger who don't vote (might be a good thing since most my age are damn near communists), and they think it's great that we should pay for old folk's drugs. They probably believe that if the program doesn't work, we'll just scrap it. Huh? When have you ever heard of a government program that just went away? We still have the Rural Electrification Commission 30 years after Rural America has been 100% electrified.
Dick Cheney actually got me thinking about a Republican vote for the president, but not if they back down from the Constitution. I guess I'm just angry. Maybe another cup of coffee will soothe my nerves.

I posted a question on TFL way back when asking about guns in the presence of a Secret Service Protectee.

My question went something like this: What authority does the Secret Service have to disarm me in a place that I'm legally authorized to carry, if that venue is being used by a protectee. For example: Bush or Gore are here in Seattle for a rally at the Key Arena. My Concealed Pistol License (and, of course, the 2nd Amendment, but that't another thread) authorizes me to carry in the Key Arena, but upon entering the Key Arena, I would be subject to search, and presume I would be denied entry with my pistol. Under what authority?

Probably under either the "We're with the government and we're to help" or "A jury would never convict us (Just ask Lon!)" clause. :D

Deanf: It seems under Bush, it's okay to carry legally (which should be defined as "you can carry all you wish due to the 2nd) but under bore, you probably will be shot and killed and then used for the next "why we should have more gun control laws" speech.

Remember that the "New Black Panther Party" went armed near Laura Bush this summer when they were protesting the pending execution of a black man. The SS was quoted as saying that they were not deemed a threat.

USP45usp,

I think you're on to something the Gore administration could use. They'll start shooting gun owners and then blame guns for the deaths. (Joke--I think.)

when we went down to see bush last week in INDY, I asked one of the sheriffs if guns were allowed inside. He said NOOOOOOOOO!!!!
So we left them in the truck. Now that I look back they didn't frisk us put us through metal detectors or anything. We could of carried them in. We saw a lotof nra members there and they also left them in the car.

It is not surprising that gun owners are probably the most law abiding citizens as a whole.
