Open carry of guns in Virginia

Hi, this is my first post on these forums. I was referred to here from shotgunworld.com forums.

I'm new to owning a gun, just got a Mossberg 500 shotgun (18.5" barrel) for home defense. I also just joined the NRA, and I signed up for a handgun safety course.

My question is about carrying guns in Virginia. I can't understand the legal code, so I was hoping someone can put it in plain English.

What can I open-carry unloaded in Virginia? What can I open-carry loaded?

When I'm transporting my handgun or shotgun in my vehicle from one location to another, does it have to be unloaded? Does the ammo have to be in a separate location, or can it be in the same bag as the unloaded gun? I drive a pickup, can the gun be in the back seat or does it have to be in the bed where I can't reach it?

Thanks.

Go to www.packing.org they have all the state carry laws there.I live in Va.according to the law you can carry a gun anywhere that's legal as long as it's in open sight. It can be loaded or unloaded just as long as IT IS In Plain View,If you put in the glove box or under the seat loaded or unloaded you're going to jail. You can carry the shotgun it's legal.Best thing to do is get a CCW it cost me 40.00 and took about 2 weeks solves all you're problems.By legal i mean no schools Church's post office and such.Hope this was helpful

Thanks for the replies and helpful links.

After I take the gun safety class, I'm going to apply for the CCW permit.
