Open Carry Experiences

I live in a state that permits open carry (Idaho), however I very rarely (if ever) see anyone carring open. I'm considering doing so. For those of you carring open, what have your experiences been with LEO, the general public, etc. I've applied for my CCW as well.

Thanks.
Brian

I live in a non-open carry state, but I have a restaurant that allows me to carry openly before and after business hours. I've had people come in before we open and spot the revolver on my hip. The only response has been a quick glance at it, then maybe another. I think given the fact that it's my restaurant might make it a little easier to accept.
There's a LEO who patrols around our lot with whom my brother and I have spoken. He also accepts the fact that we carry.
It hasn't been awkward for us at all and, from what I could tell, it hasn't been overly strange for others.
But, admittedly, I'm in a different situation.

Back in '77 I had a open carry permit while stationed in Minot ND. May be outdated but I never had a problem. BUT TIMES CHANGE!!! Now days I'd much rather carry concealed. Not just from the law enforcement side either. But from the gangsta's. If it's hidden, they don't know. If it's not, they definately do know and CAN look for ways of getting the drop on you. They could do that anyway but it makes it alot more worrysome if they don't know who's armed and who's not.

Most policemen will take a dim view of anyone carrying openly in public, even if it is legal.

You're definitely asking for trouble.

Expect some concerned citizen to phone in a "man with gun" report to the police. If it never happens, good. But be prepared. The police must respond, and in areas that allow open carry usually side with the carrier.

Danny45- Minot, ND... Ah yes, the Magic City. It's not on the edge of the earth, but you can see it from there. "Only the Best Come North" It got a tad nippy during the winter months, wouldn't you say? ;)

IMO I would rather carry concealed even if It was legal to carry openly. I would rather have the advantage of the unkowing of whether I was carrying or not.

Hello All; First of all I envy you folk's that live in a sensible state which allows
for open carry; especially Brian in Idaho. :p
Here in "the deep south", such tactics are
forbidden; unless one is on his personal
property!!! :( Having been a LEO for twenty
years, I don't have a problem with a citizen
excercising the "open carry" method. Even in
my state (Alabama) I would overlook a resident of this state carrying "a defensive
firearm" openly. For one reason, the sight of
the weapon MAY (not in all instances, of course)deter the BG from committing act's of
violence. He even may consider the fact that
the armed person may be a LEO!!! :)

With that said, for my personal satisfaction
I prefer the "concealed carry" method; as I
like the element of suprise. As taught in the
"old school", if the need arise's to draw my
weapon, you damn well better believe that I'm
going to use it!!! :) I might follow this up by calling for "life flight service"; but in
the meantime, the BG will be a shot ass.

Best Wishes,

In all the times I've carried openly when travelling in Arizona and Utah I never had a problem with the police. Even when I was on my cycle next to a squad at a stoplight. A Paige, AZ officer pulled up to me at a dam and asked if it was loaded. Very polite and wished me a safe trip. Why can't every state be like that? I feel more comfortable carrying openly when out in the desolate areas. I figure a bad guy's less likely to approach.

I have carried openly for one short weekend in Missouri, but I've never been able to carry concealed. That said, if I had a choice between the two, I'd choose to carry concealed.

However, living in Illinois I have come to the conclusion that if open carry became legal tomorrow, I'd do it every day. In Missouri, I loved the fact that it was not considered crazy to arm myself. It seemed that everyone around me had already accepted the basic concept that if attacked, I had every right to defend myself, and the attacker was the one who was gambling his life willingly. You don't realize how hard you've been pushing against the tide of stupidity until you start trying to explain the basic facts of life to someone and everyone says "But of course. How else could it possibly be?"

I carry open at work every day at work, and when I go to the bank to do our deposits I open carry and the tellers at the bank love it. They don't have a guard there, and they should they were robbed about a week ago y a guy who had a note that sadi he had a gun and to just give him the money. I don't think the guy had a gun, but If I was there I doubt I would do something.

As John lott has said just brandishing a weapon is good enough to scare off an attacker. By wearing it open at work I have significantly decreased my problems so to speak with my customers. I sell pagers and cell phones and I have no doubt in my mind that my customers carry guns, but I do it LEGALLY. They back down b/c they don't want to take the chance. Would you?

I did get asked by a cop once while wearing my gun open. He asked if I had a handgun liscense, and I said yeah. I asked him if I was a criminal, would I be dumb enough to show that I was breaking the law?? He just looked at me and said I guess your right.

I get looks somtimes, but I don't mind let them look. When the sh*t hits the fan I will be prepared and they wont. For that, I will take the dirty looks and live with them.

Country Boy, Nippy ain't the words I remember when describing it!!!!! Man it was cold. Spent two winters there in 77-78. You never had to worry about someone going AWOL either. You could still see them 3 days after they left!!!!
