Oops! another MAK-90 question

Does anyone know what the ATF requirement is for getting a different stock (pistol grip) for a Norinco if the rest of the rifle stays in factory configuration? Do I need a letter of authorization from the BATF to make the switch legal?

That bunghole stock really sucks.

TIA for info.

First off, go to http://www.ak-47.net. They have the answers to all your conversion questions.

Basically, you have the get the total number of imported parts below ten so that is no longer an "imported" rifle. This normally involves a new trigger group, stock set, and mag followers. Some sets also replace additional parts so that you do not have to put new followers in your mags.

Just remember that the rifle will only be as good as the quality of the U.S. parts that you install in it. The Norinco MAK-90 is a well made, reliable rifle. Although the quality of some U.S. parts has improved,I would rather live with the POS t-hole stock and keep the internal parts factory original. IMO,reliability is preferable to ergonomics. Just my $.02; feel free to ignore my advice!

For what it is worth I agree with MB771 and his assessement. I have two of the SAR variants with the US internals. While I am very happy with both, I am concerned with the hammers(possibly soft) in my rifles. Others have had problems with "trigger slap" due to the geometry/tolerances of the US trigger and disconnector.

I suggest leaving the bunghole stock on the MAK, and enjoy the peace of mind in knowing that the stock internals and a bunghole stock are better than the crap shoot you take with the US parts to gain the pistol grip.

M77B12.THESE GUYS ARE RIGHT DONT MESS WITH THE FINE INTERNALS OF YOUR NORINCO.DO THIS ITS 100 PERCENT LEGLE TOO.FIST REPLACE THE 3 WOODEN PARTS FORWARD HANDGUARDS AND GET YOU PISTOL GRIP.MADE IN THE usa OF COURSE thats 3 parts 2 to go.now all you have to do is reloace the followers on your maks and the bottom mag plates thats a total of 5 US part.makes it legle.just dont attach a drum or unmodified mag,i wouldnt even have one in the house.

"That bunghole stock really sucks."

Do you have a Dremel and a small drum attachment?

I used mine and in two hours completely transformed the butthole stock on mine.

Go slowly...grind and check...grind and check...and when you're done, refinishing is a snap.

But you are correct - the original configuration makes for a much nicer rifle.

Thanks, guys for all your input. I will be leaving the silly stock on it and just doing a little reshaping with a Moto-Tool. It makes a lot more sense than messing around trying to keep track of my mag followers and baseplates, etc. I surely don't want to screw up the reliability by adding soft aftermarket parts. It is a sweet shooter, I got it out of layaway friday and took it to the range today. I didn't shoot for target accuracy, just wanted to throw lead.
At 50 yards I pretty well chewed up a maple bowling pin shooting offhand and on an improvised rest I was hitting clay birds at 80 yards. I'll take some decent paper targets and really sight it in tighter on monday. I see no reason to scope a rifle of this type and even 5-6" groups at 100 yds. will be ok with me. If it's better than that, that will just be frosting. As I said, I wasn't looking to drive tacks but I was surprised that the Russian surplus hollow points were quite a bit more accurate than Winchester ball ammo.
