One shot bear stopper

Undoubtedly his duty weapon. Either a 9mm or a .40.

I doubt that the Sherriff's office carries .454 revolvers around in the event of a bear charge. :D

Sad story though.

Maybe he was smart enough to pull the shotgun outa the rack and let the bear have a charge of buckshot to the face. Random chance goes up a lot when you have 9 pellets for hitting the right spot and penetrating the skull. Oh yeh, it said pistol, scratch that. Maybe in his neck of the woods 357 magnum is still carried but I would say that even a 9mm well placed would kill a bear. I think too many guys are so focused on putting a bear down without a brain shot that they pack around cannons until they decide they are too heavy and leave them in the car. A bear shot with a 454 point blank through the heart could probably still kill you before it died.

rc, the quote from the article said he used his pistol. One would think they'd have said "shotgun" if he'd used one.

"He said the bear charged him and he fired his pistol, killing it with one shot when it was about 7 feet away."

[ from 'Terry Thompson, Muskingum County Animal Farm Owner, Allegedly Killed Self After Freeing Exotic Animals' by Andy Brownfield and Kantele Franko 10/19/11 Associated Press ]

Likely a 40 S&W, less likely a 357 Mag.

He had an unlicensed machine gun.

The NFA calls all machine guns "guns" for purposes of the act.

It is not that a handgun cannot result in a quick one shot kill, it is that it is not as reliable as using something larger.

Whatever the headstamp on the cartridge was he used it well. 7 feet isn't very far away but with a critter that has teeth and claws bent on doing you bodily harm, I don't know I would have as good a shot as he was or not. Even if I was I would have fired multiple rounds Just in Case!!
