An absorbing read on the same subject can be found in Michael McIntosh's "Shotgun Technicana". Chapter 20 "Protocol at Purdey's" takes you into that maker's workshop and follows the fabrication of a field grade SXS. The amount of hand work is incredible.
The result...extraordinary.

Craftsmanship is still out there you just have to be willing to pay for it.

Mass produced guns are good and will shoot very well , BUT some people can afford a hand made gun that's fitted to them like a glove, and engraved by the worlds finest artisans. Stocked with the best woods money can buy.

Those people that order the "bespoke" guns can afford anything they want and they do, keeping the high end gun makers busy year round.

It is nice to see what go's into a hand made firearm now matter what it costs.
