One more question. 12 or 20 gauge?

Hello all,

I'm still in the market for a new or used pumpgun and am seriously considering an 870 Wingmaster. Now my question is which gauge? I plan to use it primarily for HD but also for some clay pigeon shooting. Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Definitely 12 gauge. I have a Wingmaster and my son has an Express. The 12 is just more versatile. You can load light or heavy. A 20 gauge has limitations if you want a heavier load.

For HD and clay games, I prefer the 20. If you add waterfowl or big game, the 12 is way ahead. Just don't think a 20 is inadequate for the first two roles.

12 Gauge, for most folks.....

Heavier, for the most part.Less kick, harder to lug.

Incredible variety of loads available, from 7/8 oz target loads to 2 oz, 3 1/2" Testosterone Specials.

All else equal(Which they never are in the Real World),more aftermarket goodies, including good stuff like better stocks and pads. More choices.

20s are nice, so are 10s, 16s and 28s. But for the one shotgun shooter, a 12 is the way to go unless there's an overriding reason for the 20. Pixies, tyros, Seniors, etc, may do better with the right 20.

Oh...well, that would be me.

Went with the 12ga 870 Express Magnum with 20" barrel, factory mag extension and synthetic furniture.

Thanks for everyone's help.
