one handgun, one rifle

this has probably been posted here before but being a new guy, I am interested in opinions.

If, heaven forbid, you were restricted to only one handgun and one rifle; what would they be?

me:
A Ruger Single Six with a 4 5/8" barrel
A Ruger 10/22

I am a fan of the lowly .22 lr. It allows me to shoot enough to become very proficient with the gun. Will work in a pinch for self defense and will keep me fed if necessary.

Plus...they are just fun. In teaching kids and newbys shooting, I enjoy reactive targets, the cheapest being Ritz crackers and 'nilla wafers.

If I could only have one long gun and one short gun there is no way I'd settle for both being 22's.

I would go for a lever action rifle and a K frame 357 magnum. The K frame for sure, depending on where I was living I'd probably opt for a more powerful rifle.

AR15 in 5.56 and a Beretta 92FS. Reason? NATO calibers / US Military firearms, which should be available ammo wise and for repair parts even in times of peril.

One light, one heavier. Yes, an AR in 5.56 would work for the light rifle. and a 9mm would go for the heavier caliber handgun. The NATO cal argument makes sense to me.

While I love .22LR, it is not a reloadable cartridge and as such means you must rely on someone else to manufacture your ammo.

As long as 5.56 and 9mm are used by the military, components will be available.

What's the situation?

Civil War? SHTF? Out in the middle of the yukon wilderness?

SHTF/Civil War:
AR 5.56, Beretta 92fs 9mm

SHTF/Everyone on their own:
S&W 686 .357 mag or Ruger Single Six
Ruger 10/22

Wilderness:
S&W 629 and Marlin lever action both in .44mag

I would go with my windham weaponry .223/NATO .556 as my long gun. And as of right now cause its the only one I have until my paper work clears is my glock m 27 in .40 cal.

AR15 in 5.56 and a Beretta 92FS in 9 mm, same reason as others. NATO ammo will likely be available, parts are easy to come by and maintenance is very easy. I do like my Beretta PX4 subcompact as well. Imagine that, I put my Kimber Custom Carry Pro out. Glad it will never come to me making that decision.

I'd have to go with a Glock 19 (tons of extra parts everywhere and easy-to-find ammo) and a SCAR 17S (I like the bigger round and it is still NATO) unless this is a SHTF scenario in which case, I'd have to reluctantly go with a Sig M400 (AR15) because parts are abundant.

Where I live today?

Marlin 1894 SS
And I may cheat a little on the pistol...
Either a CZ 75 B Stainless with a Kadet adapter kit -or-
A decent 1911 with a 22LR adapter kit.

ONE rifle will have to do it all? That means an AR platform gun due to the ability to swap uppers and change calibers. If I could have only one upper, then I'd get a Knights Armament SR-25 ECR (20" barrel, rails, etc). I can hunt, target shoot, and defend myself with the 7.62x51mm and 308 Winchester cartridges. The gun has a 20 round capacity, which is more than enough for any rifle gunfight I may have the misfortune to participate in. Lower capacity magazines are available too.

A handgun is quite a bit more difficult to decide upon. Do I go with power and a larger size or concentrate on a smaller gun? I could go with the Glock 26 since it can use Glock 19 and 17 magazines. It's small enough that it's very concealable, yet I can use a longer magazine with grip adapter if the need arises. It's tempting to go with an S&W Model 29-3 with 4" barrel for carry and recreation. I'd shoot 44 Special almost exclusively. However, the Model 29 is a large handgun and I need a small, concealable gun for everyday carry. I could make do with the M29. Another temptation is to go with a gun in 45 ACP. A Glock 30 would be a good compromise, though the S&W M&P 45 Compact is even more concealable (Glock 19 sized) and the magazine still holds eight rounds. My guess is that I'd end up compromising on something in 45 ACP since I really like reloading that cartridge.

Easy to answer, it's not a theoretical question. My wife limits me to one each.

Colt 6920 AR-15
Ruger SR40

If it develops that I have to feed my family, I'll steal a .22 rifle.
If the rules of this thread won't allow that, I'll get a slingshot.
