One handed slide-rack on a P99

In the CZ100 thread I heard talk of racking the slide using the rear site hooked on your belt/pants/whatever. I had never thought of doing this, but I'm wondering if anyone has tried this on a P99. The rear site on the P99 is plastic, an I'm afraid I'd snap it off if I tried to operate the slide with it.

Also, I've been thinking about getting a set of Trijicon sights for the gun. Same question, has anyone racked their P99 one-handed with the Trijicons installed?

The CZ-100 has a metal piece directly behind the ejection port made specifically for this. It looks kind of like another rear sight just ahead of the real sight. I dont think i would attempt this on the P99 for fear of knocking the adjustable rear sight out of whack.

the use of a one-handed slide rack tecnique is practice for times of extreme emergency, when one has been injured to such an extent that they have lost use of one hand/arm but must continue the fight and reload/clear malfunctions.

In this dire circumstance, possibly damaging your sights should not be a concern as much as bringing your weapon to bear once more.

Yes, one-handed racking can damage your sights, whether metallic or plastic. It is not meant to be "cool" and can be outright dangerous except in emergencies.

Since most folks can neither schedule nor script their emergencies...not a bad idea to practice either handed, any grip, any stance, injury etc etc.

If the gun is not up to such treatment....possibly need to rethink the choice of carry gun.

Easy fix..Get some "real" sights on that gun!:)

I just tried it with my USPC .45 ...unloaded of course! and it can be a bummer. To attempt to do any sort of clearance drill would be extremely hard. I imagine it would be even harder with the extremely low profile non snag type sights you commonly find these days. You would be better off going for a second gun.

I'm with RedLg. If you don't trust your sights enough that you think a one-handed rack could damage them or move them off zero, then you definitely need some different sites.

I have Trijicons on mine, and just tried (yes, unloaded) on the edge of my desk. No problem. I imagine in an emergency, you could use anything that would grab, and offer resistance enough to pull the slide... the edge of a car door, a park bench... a tree branch... or a belt buckle... just be careful not to shoot your d*ck off while tring this last one.

Why not just use the slide release.
Because the weapon may have malfunctioned, and you need to actually completely rack the slide, rather than just release the slide on a fresh magazine.
During Jeff Gonzales pistol course, we not only did type 1 and 2 malfunction clearances one handed (tap-rack-bang), but we also did one handed type 3 double feed clearances (tap-rack-strip mag-rack-rack-rack-new mag-rack-bang). Do that using only your weak side hand, in the rain, at night. Every single mag we fired in Jeff's class had a dummy round randomly inserted, so we did a LOT of clearance drills.
My Walther P99 w/Trijicons performed flawlessly, in fact the tall square profile of the Trijicons was a tremendous asset in one handed manipulations.

Rovert: Which set of Trijicons are you using, I understand that there are several Trijicon sight offerings for the P99 (i.e. direct from Trijicon or through Earl's Repair Service). It looks like the Earl's Repair service sights have rounded off edges that may not be very conducive to this exercise.

Also, what are yours made of? Plastic or Metal?

P.S. Thanks for the advice on the 'belt-buckle rack'. :)

Venom, these are factory branded Trijicons, purchased from Ultimate Outdoors. They're not Earl's version.

Glad to help with the advice. I wouldn't want to have you change your screen name to 'Tiny Tim' or John Bobbitt. :D

Amen to what Sam I Am sez!!!

When a LEO, I practiced my one handed mal drills with my carry gun then, a G23 with Trij. night sights. No impact on the sights.

I guess it would depend on the smith???
