One Flyer

Maybe a dumb questions. Nevertheless, got benchrest setup etc.. No need to go into specifics. First 2-4 rounds 1/2 to 1/4 MOA then the darn flyer ALWAYS NOT THE FIRST OR THE SECOND, ALWAYS THE THIRD OR FOURTH ROUND. The fifth back in group-it is driving me ##########. I have tried everthing-including completely hands off-free recoil to everything else. Again always not the first or second round (doing 5 shot groups)-always the third of fourth round. I know its shooter error-but what am I doing-what do you suggest???

RR, you may be trying too hard.It is not that easy to be consistent for several shots. You doing great, then you faulter and then you are back on track.Somewhere in that time span you are loosing your great technique. Analyse what you are doing and try to be as relaxed as possible. Your rifle should be rested in such a way that you only have to hold it the same way everytime and squeeze the trigger. You know how, just fine tune your efforts and good luck.

The barrel could be heating up by the 3rd and 4th rounds. Are you allowing enough time for it to cool down

Like capbuster stated, you might be trying to hard too. It's natural to see a one holer group and get excited. Once that happens, a flier is in your near future ;)

Relax, breathe, squeeze and enjoy the day!

;) why don't you ask a friend or two to do the shooting? If the stubborn flier persists, the mistery probably is in the rifle. If not, check the operator...

Thanks for the replies. Naw-its the shooter. Combination of impatience, frustration, too much coffee, the heat, and failure to notice that after the first 2 or 3 rounds I must "reset" the rifle so that the recoil will be identical (2-3 rounds it migrated to a slightly different position-used tape to confirm-I have a less than optimum stock for what I am doing). Note that after the "flyer" I repositioned the rifle-and round back in group. Now I scrutinize the "position" after the 2nd round.

Fliers

It might be to your advantage to see if you have a barrel that heats up, not on the first shot but on the 3 or 4th shot. There could be your flier. My 223 barrel heats up on the 1st shot and I have to discount the first shot.

Are you tracking the wind? A switch can cause up to an inch at 100 yards... Check some of the archive subjects at benchrest.com...
