SHERIDAN, Colo. -- Sheridan police are looking for five armed men involved in a smash-and-grab on South Federal Tuesday afternoon.

The armed men walked into the Pawn 1 store around 1 p.m. and left with several bags of guns and jewelry, Sheridan police said.

All five robbers were wearing all black. One was wearing a motorcycle helmet with a face shield on it. All five were also wearing black ski masks.

One robber had what appeared to be a fully automatic Tec-9 gun, another other had a sawed off shotgun and the other three robbers were armed with hand guns.

At least 30 weapons were stolen, according to police.

The store is located on the 3300 block of South Federal.

The suspects remain at large and there are reports that machine guns were taken in the robbery.

In the story about the pawn shop robbery in Sheridan, ( http://www.thedenverchannel.com/news/3345303/detail.html ) it was stated "One robber had what appeared to be a fully automatic Tec-9 gun ..."

There is no such thing as a "fully automatic" Tec-9 firearm. They don't exist. All Tec-9 and Tec DC-9 firearms are semi-automatic and only fire one cartridge for each pull of the trigger.

The statement is untrue, inflammatory, and a result of poor research, poor reporting, or an anti-firearms bias on the part of the reporter.

Actually, they aren't stupid, just despicable :barf:

I got to meet a reporter from the Register Guard here in Eugene (I was at LCC registering) and I just came right out and asked her, "Do reporters do any research when they describe a firearm in a story". She said yes. I then asked, why do they call any rifle an "assault weapon", "fully automatic", etc.. when they should know that they aren't.

Her answer, "They (the reporters) are DIRECTED by their editors to use these descriptions so that the gun (anti) agenda WILL BE PUSHED TOWARD THE BANNING OF ALL FIREARMS"!!!!!!!!!!!

They do this on purpose, not on accident.

Sometimes it's because they ARE stupid!

Our little East Texas town's paper made this exact error last year. I fired off a full page letter explaining their mistakes (there were several in one short story). Not only did they print the entire letter, unedited, and apologize for the mistakes but blamed the local Police Chief for giving them the wrong info!
:D
Which was probably a really stupid thing to do!

So if someone went through the effort to get a tech-9 to fire full auto what would they call it? (certainly NOT a "fully automatic tech-9" right?)

Well, the robbery came off without a shot being fired so it is unknown whether the Tec (not Tech)-9 was fully automatic, semi automatic, or a squirtgun with the little orange plug removed from the end of the barrel.

From what I understand, the BATF(E) tests all new entries to the firearms market to see if they are readily convertible to automatic fire. The only way they make it to market is to pass this test. So I must believe that the firearm in question was not converted because, if it were, the person doing so would have the skills to hold a real job instead of ripping off pawn shops.

Using logic again are we? :D

Here in the Peoples' Republic of California the local Politburo at the Los Angeles Times routinely refers to ALL semi auto rifles in the military style as "fully automatic". Every AR type is referred to as an "M16" and every AK type is referred to as an "AK47". BTW, each and every reference is accompanied by the word "high powered" as well.

Helmets and black ski masks? How do they know it wasn't the BATFE conducting a 'raid'?

While it most likely was a semi-auto, the statement that there are no full-auto Tec-9s is false. I've seen transferrable full-auto Tec-9's for sale on subguns.com. I'm sure a few were converted illegally too.

One robber had what appeared to be a fully automatic Tec-9 gun, another other had a sawed off shotgun and the other three robbers were armed with hand guns.

How would the reporter KNOW it was full-auto unless shots had been fired?...

Another case of "pushing your agenda instead of checking your facts"---an epidemic among today's media... :barf:

While it most likely was a semi-auto, the statement that there are no full-auto Tec-9s is false.
I have never heard of a full-auto, as-manufactured Tec-9. I find it hard to believe that the manufacturer would name a full-auto firearm a Tec-9 knowing the bad reputation of the semi-auto version for accuracy, operational characteristics, manufacturing defects, etc.

Tec-9s are crap right out of the box. They are the Lorcin / Raven of the tech pistol marque.

Ah, yes. The wonderful market economy. Little did A. Smith know that his "invisible hand" would be robbing pawn shops. :) :uhoh:

(edit: where's that darned uhoh smiley?!)

jimpeel,

It might interest you to know that the TEC-9 is a US made clone of the Interdynamics KG99. Conversion info can be bought here. For informational purposes only, of course. All Federal laws apply... :)
