Once Again, A FN-FAL Question

As I hoped, I got a bit of cash this Christmas and, combined with what I've saved over the last few months, I can now afford to buy my first "Evil Black Rifle" :D

I've settled on a FN-FAL, but as I understand from my research at the various FN-FAL/STG-58 WebPages, the Century STG-58 "FrankenFALS" are a bit of a crap shoot when it comes to quality in both assembly and shooting ability. Unfortunately this is the most I can afford to spend in my quest to piss off as many liberal gun grabbing bliss-ninnies as possible. :p:p

I have looked at what both AIM Surplus in Ohio and Wholesale Firearms (formerly Burns Bros.) in NY have to offer and the prices are about the same.

My questions are:
What have been the experiences of the rest of you folks in dealing with either company?

Is there a particular company out there that is pickier in their purchasing than others, and could provide me with a higher quality rifle from the inventory at hand.

Should I instead, take my $$ and build one myself, instead of buying a FrankenFAL where I would then have someone like ARS "tweak" it out?

Are there any other retailers I might look at?

Any advice or comments would be helpful

Thanks

Mordwyn.45,

I'm glad you started this thread. I, too, am seriously considering a STG-58 rifle from Aim Surplus but would like to hear from a few satisfied or dissatisfied owners first. I know the popular reply to these threads is "buy one from DSA" but at less than half the price of a DSA rifle the Aim Surplus product is attractive. I'm just looking for a good, reliable shooter not a collector's item and I'm also on a budget.

Anyway, I'll be paying attention to this thread to see what kind of response you get.

I bought mine from AIM and it's very nice. Don't buy one for DSA unless you'd just rather spend the money on the gun and not ammo. Mine did NOT come with a bipod or carry handle but it has been very reliable so far. I heartily suggest you insist on one with the brazilian Imbrel reciever like mine. I just went shooting with a guy with a century FAL built on a Hesse reciever. It does not look as nice and he has sent it back to Century twice and it was still jamming for him.

Get a FAL they are awsome

I got one from AIM and was happy with it, it was all
very good condition STG parts (except for the US made parts). I expected to have to replace the piston. I also
replaced the US made stock which came without a sling attachment.

However, I have heard that the latest crop of Century guns
are a mismosh of STG parts, R1 parts and even some inch pattern parts with new barrels. I would pass on these as I think you could build a better one.

I recommend you purchase an Imbel receiver from AIM and have a gun built from a parts kit.

Mord, If you buy the Century, there is a CHANCE that you will have a fully functional rifle, but don't bet on it. If it's not fully functional, you could always send to a smith that specializes in fals and have him make it right when you can afford it. The problems could range from parts you can replace yourself to having to index the barrel onto the receiver which requires a special wrench. If you are mechanically inclined, I recommend building your own. It is a very rewarding experience and you will know it far better than the blind hammer wielding primates that assemble the Centurys.HTH.

A Desicion

Thanks all of you for your replies to my post. After reviewing what all ya'all have said and combining that with the information gathered from my CC post on FNFAL.COM I'm going to go with one of the new batch of IAI FAL's that AIM Surplus has picked up.

At $750 + shipping and FFL charges, the cost is a bit more than I first planned on spending but is still within my total budget. From what I've also gathered they're virtually pristine Imbel kits on new Imbel receivers, assembled by the smiths at IAI in BY GOD Texas and so far I haven’t heard a bad word about either these rifles or AIM.

Although I would have loved to Built my own, I find that project a bit daunting for me at the moment so once I get the rifle in my grubby, and not so little hands I'm going to get Gunplumbers FN-FAL video and accompanying text manual and "reverse engineer" the thing until I know it's innards backwards and forwards. At that point I'll probably be so totaly addicted to the things that I'll start building them nonstop ;-)

Well, I hope the knowledge that one more citizen has rescued one more "little lost black rifle" from a blast furnace or cutting saw warms your heart as it does mine.
Take that ya dammed bliss ninnies :p

I'll be putting together a range report over the next few weeks, as soon as I get the thing home and as soon as it warms up a bit around here. I never thought that my blood would thin out after moving to Fl from the PRNY but DAMN it's gotten cold down here!!! ;)

Thanks again

Rob
