On the Screen Name Thread...??

I posted what was apparently a thought-provoking message about screen names on Wednesday, titled "What is wrong with The Firing Line." Less than 24 hours later I check for replies, find a zillion, but also find the topic locked.

I am *just asking* because I'm new and don't know the answer--why was it locked? I was unable to make any reply. What is the policy about locking topics?

As to the thread title I used, for those of you administrators who got their dander up :) , no, of course there is nothing wrong with The Firing Line, but the title got you and a lot of others to read the thread, didn't it? :D

It is certainly everyone's own business what name they use. I personally don't think a screen name does much to "protect" anyone, but that's just my opinion. That and a dollar will buy you a cup of coffee.

And ya know, *everything* I said was just my opinion...hardly worth getting excited about. ;)

Mark, I closed the thread because it went over 100K. Nothing personal, just business. ;)

One of our more-or-less standard policies is to close oversized threads to reduce strain on the server and make the threads quicker to load for those of us with piddly analog connections.

Thank-you; that's just what I wanted to know. I assumed it was something like that but if you don't ask you don't get answers. :)

HA!

Or, should I say,

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!

Now YOU'RE asking the kinds of questions that we used to ask of you when you were moderator of the Firearms Forum, Mark!

Feels kind of, powerless, doesn't it?

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

(Darn it, they don't have a smilie for maniacial laughter... :) )

Good Evening Everyone-

It would appear to me that the reason that many refrain from using their "real" names on Internet boards is purely security.

Sadly, it is for this reason that I also have difficulty writing pro-RKBA letters to the editor of my local paper. I get the feeling that anyone who picks up the paper that day starting with innocuous-types like the:

Butcher

Baker

Candlestick maker

and continuing with others like:

Gangbangers

Dope addicts

Glue sniffers

Miscellaneous assorted crackpots n' crazies

They can all say, "Well, it looks like The Blue Jays family probably has a bunch of guns!" Once my name is posted on the Internet or in my local papers, it's just a matter of looking-up my address in the phone book. Let the criminals "roll the dice," and do their own research. I'm not giving them my name and address to help them "make a plan."

Police agencies frequently advise people not to publish exact details about weddings and funerals because criminals frequently review these sections of the paper to look for "easy" B & E targets.

Don't view colorful handles as "hiding" or "alienating" people, view handles as good people helping ne'er-do-wells to remain honest! :)

Best Regards,

~ Blue Jays ~

Don't believe it for a second, Mark. I was once told by a good friend that Coinneach is a gun-toting Nazi. Now I see the evidence--CENSORSHIP!

The crow flies at midnight.

:D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D
Who loves ya, Sensop?

K-frame, I don't give a small furry northbound rodent's southern exposure! :p It's NICE to be just one of "da people" for a change! Now shut-up, Mike, and buy me a Gin & Tonic...

Dennis, thank-you. I have long experience at creating teasers... :)

Blue Jays, must be a more educated class of gang-bangers and glue-sniffers in your neck of the woods...because THOSE TYPES DON'T READ THE EDITORIAL PAGE in mine! :D

Blue Jays,

That's my opinion, as well. I don't have a problem giving out my name to those who have shown some maturity on the board (most folk here).

Good Evening Spectre-

Privacy concerns are just a by-product of living in "Condition Yellow" for me and my family.

When I think of all my good friends, college roommates, and trusted co-workers, the same sentiment can be seen in them, too.

These friends would all love to be more outspoken in regard to firearm ownership to the world-at-large, but the associated risks seem a bit high.

As I mentioned, before you mail that well-crafted pro-RKBA letter to the editor of your local "leftie" newspaper, make sure you have a nice gun locker bolted to the floor of your basement!

Most newspapers require a signature and phone number (for verification purposes) for publication. Virtually all papers will not print a letter with a "name withheld by request" at the bottom.

Let's face it, anyone who is willing to write a pro-RKBA letter to a large newspaper probably already owns firearms. Likewise, your average anti-RKBA scribble is from a non-owner. It's too easy for someone with the wrong intentions to "read between the lines."

Maybe I should come up with a phony name like "Robert Smith" for my letters to the editor? Anytime the newspaper calls to verify authorship, I can just say, "Yes, Robert Smith speaking."
