On the Fence

I have been debating friends, relatives, shooting buddies re: getting my 1st rifle. Now, I do own a 10/22, but since I can use it indoors, I don't really categorize it as a true long gun. Anyway, I shoot my pistols weekly...like going to a weekly poker game. The guys I shoot with shoot long guns maybe every 6-8 weeks. I'm not sure th $800-$900 I'd put into a nice bolt action target gun set-up is well spent. I have no problem spending that kind of money on a pistol because I know it will be used, but a rifle? Suggestions?

How about getting a rifle that complements one of your handguns?

A .357 Mag. or .44 Mag. Ruger, Winchester or Marlin lever action.

A 9mm or .45 Ruger or Marlin.

Or, how about hitting a gunshow and getting yourself a relatively inexpensive, but emminently fun, Enfield, Moisin-Nagant, or Swedish Mauser?

An SKS is still a good bet, even though prices have been going up over the past couple of years.

You don't have to spend a lot of money to get a fun rifle.

Last month I shot my buddy's Savage 223 varmint gun at 100 yards. 3 shots, 1 hole. Cool, but got boring after awhile. Shot a .308 Remington at 200 yards. Now that was fun...but then I'm looking at $1000 for a gun I'll shoot only 8x/year, maybe. But 200 yards was something totally fun, plus the little boom from the gun was far more enjoyable than the 223.

If you want a good (but not match quality) shooter that will not stretch the budget, consider a Savage 110. Wal-Mart was selling them with a scope for around $450 (or less) recently.

Or a Remington 700 ADL without scope is in the $450 range.

I like Mike Irwin's suggestions, too. That's a lot of options to choose from.

I was in the same position you are in, so I went out put a deposit on a .243 Remington ADL synthetic stock, the gun cost $365.00 then after I put the scope and all on it I will have about $500.00 in it, not to bad just to start out with, if I enjoy shooting rifles as much as I do pistols I will look into a BDL or a Winchester model 70 down the road. But I belong to an indoor range as well as a outdoor range though that varies from 25-300 yds so I can shoot it everyweek if I enjoyed it.
Good Luck...

Everybody NEEDS a good Bolt action in .308 or 30-06. With a decent scope. It has to be in the Constitution somewhere.

You mean you don't have one? Are you a commie or something:D It's like Apple Pie and the american flag. Get with it:D

Take the boreing out........shoot from standing, kneeling, sitting, prone etc. Animal and people hunters rarely have a bench with them.

Not slamin the benchresters, that be a nuther art form.

So many iterations of such a fun sport.

I like Mike's suggestion about getting a rifle chambered in a pistol caliber.

If not that, then a nice rifle in .243 Win. would be a good choice IMO. Suitable for target shooting out to a few hundred yards and animals up to small deer at similar ranges.

I think the ADL synthetic is a pretty good deal for an entry level gun! My wife bought me one last year, as a surprise. (boy, was I ever!) It came with bases, rings and a sling. The synthetic stock is a plus IMHO. It won't warp, rot or crack. I'm not crazy about the black paint, but hey, what do ya expect for about $400.00? I'm going to have it parkerized anyway. I know a guy in Okie City who does a beautiful job. I LOVE black rifles!
