On G21 and other .45s

Hi, all,

Anyone besides me have a hard time with the ergonomics of the G21? Do you do better with the G30, or is it about the same?

Also, is there anyone in the audience who owns and practices with .45s and nothing else? How many rounds do you shoot in a practice session?

Thanks,

I have a third generation G20 (same frame) that I find fits me very well. I like it better than the 29 and 30.

I have many different guns, in many different calibers. Why would I limit myself to just one caliber?*

*This rehtorical question brought to you by:

SIG Sauer, Glock, Walther, Colt, Heckler & Koch, Ruger, Smith & Wesson, Korth, Taurus, Ed Brown Products, Wilson Combat, Les Baer, Kahr, Para-Ordnance, Auto-Ordnance, ad nauseum.:p

In my case, it's kind of like being the mule between the two bales of hay.

Seriously, I thought everyone on this group had decided on the One True Caliber (tm) for stopping BGs. If one is interested in self-defense and not collecting, why not limit oneself to just that caliber?

Really, I've got two pistol permits coming. I'll be getting probably a HK USP .45 and something else. I was wondering whether the something else should be a G19 or, well, something else, maybe a G21, maybe not.

Right now I only have one Glock the 30. Once I added the mag extenders it fit great. I use it as my glove box and carry gun. It is a great all around gun.

Hi PD,
Yeah, I have trouble with both the G21 and the G30. Both are to fat for my hand. That is why I traded my G30 for a G36. Fits just right!!!:) Lately I have ben shooting nothing but .45!! I average about 150 rounds per week. I am almost out of ammo though, so I will be forced to switch to shooting the backup. I carry the G36, so I want to stay practiced with it. However, I have to give my backup gun some air time too!!!!:D

Get a 9mm. SIG Sauer, Glock, Walther, HK, CZ, it doesn't matter. Having a 9mm will come in handy. The ammo costs less and they're fun to shoot.

I own a G19 and a G21. Love them both. The G21 is for on-the-hip carry and around the house duty, and the G19 is my CCW weapon of choice.

That being said, I will definitely grant that the G21 grip can be a tad on the large side. But that's a plus for me at my size, and it's my favorite gun. If it doesn't feel right in your hands, get something that does. The HK USP is a superb firearm, though I don't notice that big a difference in size between it and the G21 where the grips are concerned.

But I wouldn't say "no" if someone offered me a battery of an HK USP .45 and a G19! :D

Have you fired the G-21 or just picked one up to handle? To me the G-21 feels awful in your hand at first, until you pull the trigger. The low bore axis coupled with the wide grip make it one of the softes recoiling pistols I've shot. If you have not shot the G-21 give it a go before you dismiss it. That said, I favor the HK USP 45 over the G-21, based on its' lockwork not grip ergonomics.

Good luck in your selection.

I agree with JJCII. I have small hands 7" from tip to wrist. The G21 is the easiest .45 I've ever shot compared to 1911's, USP's, and Sig P220's. And that translates to more FUN! It feels like a 9mm to me, but there's no mistaking the boom and flash with the right loads. Shoot one and if its still not right for you there's always the G36, but its more of a handful I hear.

I usually shoot about 100 rounds of .45 and 50 rounds of something else (9mm, .40, or .357 Mag or Sig) because I like variety.

I prefer the USP45 over the Glock 21, but I have to second the sentiments of JJCII - My old Glock 21 was the softest recoiling .45 I have ever shot. Great gun, wish I hadn't traded it away.

One .45?

Yes, Sig-Sauer P220A manufactured and assembled
in West Germany. I shoot between 250-500 rounds
each session; depending on how much time I have
allocated for my hetic schedule.

Well, both, kind of. I shot a G21 in First Steps Pistol. It had had some wierd sort of modification done to the grip -- looked like someone had been all over it with a soldering iron -- and my hand felt sandpapered afterward.

But that didn't matter -- I just had a real hard time reaching the mag eject one-handed. (And the G21, well, isn't pretty.)

Sounds like you fired one that had a "grip reduction" :barf:

Not really a fair comparison, kind of like shooting a 1911 that had been modified to SW round butt J frame grip and wondering why everybody likes John Browing so well.

the g 21 is big. Not so much a issue on the range, but for real shooting, fast shooting, transversing between targets, and for
retention, a big problem. If you like a big bore glock I hate to recommend the smaller gun but the .40 looks ok.
on the balance, the g 21 kicks very little for a .45. it's low bore axis and short trigger make if a very nice shooting gun. It is just to big for 100% control for my hands. It is usually very accurate. Also fired g 20 10mm, there was a accurate powerhouse with lilttle recoil. so, as with most handguns, it is a tradeoff.
the big glock is an interesting gun and for the person with adequate hand stretch a very good handgun.

Glock 21

I can't speak to the size of the Glock 21, it fits me fine. If your hands are small that can be a problem, but a Glock offers more than just ergonomics. Every shot is exactly the same. No DA/SA. No cylinder turning. Pull the trigger and BANG!

I like my 21. I also have a 17. I had a 26, but didn't like it. My 21 is so easy to shoot, it is almost no fun at all. It is all business, always consistent, always accurate, always ready. It is so business like, I have mentioned to others on more than one occasion that it has no soul. I like quirky and the Glock is not quirky. That being said, if my life depended on one handgun, give me no soul and all business. Quirky is ok at the range.

The older I get the more I believe in having/using only one caliber. You can buy in bulk and everything is interchangeable. Of course, to this point I haven't lived to this ideal, but when purchasing a new gun, it must be in one of the calibers I already have.

Good luck,

B.L.

For me the grip on the 21 feels like a 2x4,however i'am pleased with my 30,fits my hand well and i can fire it well.

That's interesting, that some people say that the G30 fits them better than the G21, especially since they both have the same overall width...

Is it more of a matter of the shorter grip, then?

I have a Hogue Hand All on my Glock 21 and it feels perfect. However, I just bought a G21 with the new frame style (fingergroves) so I'm trying to figure out how to make it as comfy as my old frame G21.

Glock has a really prominant backstrap hump on it's guns. As you move from full to compact to subcompact the hump moves as well, which may be why some may favor the 30's fit over the 21's.
