I have ground the point off of the slide release and the bolt will still not release automaticly. Is there any thing else I need to do for the modification?

You should just spring for the modified part. Available on Brownells.com. Since you've already moded your part, the modified one should be a bit concave where the point used to be. (dish it out a bit)
 
Compare yours with this:

Notice the shape where the point used to be. It should be a curve, not just flat.
I've done it w/o spring modification.
 
Besides the ground section needing to be slightly rounded, if you are using a plastic mag extension release (the cheap ones they sell at Cheaper-Tahn-Dirt, Cabela's, etc.) the area of the bolt release that contacts that part could be binding. The solution for that problem is to grind/sand off some of the mag release to loosen that area.
