Olympics

Hi,all.Just recently registered on TFL.Thought I would post the following.Found it on the sports page of the Times Dispatch.
SYDNEY,Australia-The Australian government is facing a diplomatic standoff with nations - including the United States,Israel and China - determined to bring weapons to the Sydney Olympics to protect their athletes.
The federal government is maintaining that Australian authorities will retain responsibility for the security of all athletes and officials.Israel and the U.S. had both reportedly applied for exemptions from Australia's tough firearms laws to allow agents to bring their weapons into Australia for the Sept. 15 - Oct. 1 Olympics.
Israel has been sensitive to security needs since 11 athletes were killed by Palestinian terrorists at the 1972 Munich Games.

Flame all you want, but I'd LOVE to see the Olympics cancelled or boycotted because of this particular issue, though I would hate to see their work go to waste.
Of course, the US will likely kowtow to Australia's wishes - at the behest of the screwball in the White House.

IIRC, security is normally the host country's duty. I suppose that a team wishing to bring along their own security should get quasi-official status as a courtesy. Anyone know how it was done in Atlanta? Should we send the SEALS or Rangers to watch over our athletes?

I'm surprised the shooting sports participants were allowed to bring their weapons in for the events. I hear that a group in Oz is pushing for all shooting sports to be removed from Olympic competition, or at least from these games.

Wanna talk fun? I live in Salt Lake City and there has been some talk about CCW's in the Olympic areas. Theres 3 schools of thought, one is ban them in the Venues, two is No Carry in the State while the Olympics is on and my favorite "Screw 'em this is America, Let them know what it Feels like to be Safe for a Change."

Plannin on going and packin.

It galls me that with a dozen or more shooting events, the dominant media routinely pretends Olympic shooting competition doesn't exist.

A couple of Olympics ago, a WOMAN won the Skeet Shooting event, and unless my memory is playing tricks on me, this was both the last time men & women competed against one another directly, and it happened during the "Year of the Woman." One would think these circumstances would make the event newsworthy.

Of course, our dominant media ignored this, but I actually saw video and heard commentary in a most unlikey venue: it was covered as part of the in-flight entertainment on a flight to Harare on AIR ZIMBABWE!!!!!

Well its no secret - I'm in SLC city as well.
I am not big of the idea of the Olympics here in the first place... especially with all the SLOC crap and the even bigger SNAFU of the damned freeways... All tore up and wont all be open until the Games are almost on top of us.
I am convinced that Utah is managed by a ship of fools... and UDOT is clinically insane.

In fact I am writing a letter to the editors of local papers today about these issues.

Ok that's 4 TFL people on the Wasatch Front that I know of. Sounds like a Range and BBQ party potential. George there used to be a group called "Utahns for the Second Amendment" Do you know what happend to them?

UPI: MELBOURNE

Five weeks after the Libian terrorist attacks on the Olympic Village during which the entire teams from the UK, US and Israel were killed, two of the Australian governmental officials instrumental in preventing foreign security forces in the country were found murdered in their offices. Sources close to the investigation said that they were shot in the back of the head with .22 pistols.

When asked to comment on this latest event the UK Olympic Committee said: "The Australian Security Forces did all they could do to prevent the attack on the Olympic Village and these last two murders only underline the need to remove all firearms from the hands of the population." The response from the US was stronger: "These two murders only show that the Australian Security Forces were and are not up to doing the job they were tasked to do." The most interesting statement came from Israel: "What goes around, comes around."

The Security Forces continue their seach for the remaining Libians that escaped after the attack on the village. There has been no further word on how the machineguns, grenades and rockets were smuggled into the country.

We had a TFL Gathering some time back with the idea of a semi monthly gathering... but that didn't fuse.
We are past due on this account and I think its a good idea to set another one up.
BBQ sounds good - the Sauce? "Bulls Eye"! :D

I dont know about anyone else - but my Detonics will be a constant companion regarless of any sports events in the area.

Just caught up with this thread.

As I understand it from the local news here, both the US and Israeli security forces will be "allowed" to be armed -- but they're the only ones. It's sheer bloody-mindedness on behalf of our gun-loathing Attorney-General to suggest or think that other "high-profile" countries (Canada, Germany, South Africa, UK etc.) will leave their guns at home because of our poxy firearms laws. They even had an ex-security agent for a foreign country (I missed the country) saying on TV they'll simply send larger diplomatic pouches to Australia ....

And what will we do? Withdraw our embassy staff from the offending countries?? Trade sanctions??

Bwaaahhhahahaaha ....... give me a break.

Another couple in the Salt Lake Valley would like to echo 1) desire for a TFL get-together and 2) updates on SLC Olympic-related gun issues (we don't seem to hear about them).

Sincerely, the Bryces :)
