Olympic Arms

Accurate, but have had quality issues in the past. They're one of the least expensive brands- I wouldn't pay any more then $600 for one, and I'd even have to think it over before doing that.

My first one was an Olympic.Still have it and it shoots fine.Don't have a lot of rounds through it but no problems so far.Had it about 3 years now.

I think you could find a used one for $500 if you can hold out long enough.

Saw one at a gun store for $620, I do not think they are that great, heard about problems. I heard someone's AR-15 went full auto, I do not remember if it was Olympic arms or not..

Olympic Arms is one of the only AR15 manufacturer to make every major component part in-house. They have been found to constantly meet the rigid specifications of military, government and law enforcement agency contracts. Olympic Arms has provided firearms for Law Enforcement and Government agencies around the globe, including every branch of the U.S. Armed Forces.

My girfriends dad has an Olympic Arms AR he picked up used for $400 that way outperforms either of the crappy M&P's I bought. I wouldn't pay more than $650 for a new one, as there are better rifles out there.

I have had one for nearly 20yrs and it is has been fine. Not saying there aren't better, but for the money they are hard to beat.

Had one as my first AR. I was young and dumb, would never buy one again. Although I have to admit it had decent accuracy.Besides the lower being out of spec and getting some other small issues the guns are made of substandard materials and you don't have much if any Mil-Spec component nor testing.

If you want to have a nice budget AR I would much rather buy a S&W MP15 or something similar, if you can save a little more go BCM, Daniel Defense, or get a colt($899).

Fine if you want a stripped lower etc. They have a tiny following here in WA. They are every where at the local gun shows. :barf:

Olympic made and sold a lot of economy model AR's, cast receivers caused problems. I would avoid these models but the current production seems to be fine. The ones I have seen at the range are accurate and function 100%. You can't judge the whole product line by looking at one model.

Well, that's a god reason to avoid them......;)

I have been hearing this for years, never actually heard of anyone having a problem with a cast receiver. I certainly have no problem with mine.

I ended picking up a Del-Ton w/ MOE kit on it (CTR stock, Grip, Handguard & Mag). The Magpul parts are in OD Green and the rest of the AR is black. I also bought a EOTech "knockoff" Holographic sight. Hopefully I will get some better pictures because these suck, but they are from my phone. Overall, I'm happy with what I got for what I need. Thanks

When it comes to ANY weapon, you need to do your research. The BEST place, is to go to manufacturer SPECIFIC forums. I.e. Go to the S&W forum to learn about the M&P's. There are forums or sections dedicated to most manufacturers. This is where you'll get your best information.

When you're on a manufacturer specific forum, all; if not the overwhelming majority; of posters own that brand. Therefor, they are much more honest with each other. There is no competition and there are no egos. If you're on the forum that is for olympic or bushmaster or M&P, etc... you normally don't have the Colt, LMT, or BCM crowd giving biased and prejudiced opinions. Every manufacturer; including the MOST EXPENSIVE AND WELL KNOWN; will have at least one customer that was totally dissatisfied and thinks that brand sucks and is the worst.

Go to the manufacturer specific forums; not forums like this one or other generic firearms forums. See how many posts start with: "Need Help"; "Why can't I....."; "Is this normal", etc.... Basically, look for negative/problem posts. Then, compare that to the number of: "Look at my new toy"; "I'm so excited"; "What accessories"; and other non-problem threads and posts are started. Now remember; forums are generally made up of 2 types of people. Those looking for answers to their problems; and "enthusiasts/hobbiests". What that means is, most people who are "Happy" with their item, aren't going to come to a forum to tell be they are happy. It's usually those who have a problem. So; if 1 in 10 threads are about problems, that DOESN'T MEAN THAT 10% OF OWNERS HAVE PROBLEMS!!! Less than 5% of people participate in forums. That's for ANY subject. cars, PC's, home theater, guns, skiing, etc... We're a very small minority. But if you can go to the S&W forum, and discover "X%" of threads started are negative or need help in nature, then you compare that to the Olympic, bushmaster, RockRiver, Colt, Daniel, LMT, etc... forums; you'll be able to determine who seems to have more issues.

This is the ONLY way of determining the "Overall" quality of a specific rifle or pistol. A person telling you a Colt sucks, means absolutely nothing. Neither does them telling you it's great. Individual accounts and experiences are too biased. ESPECIALLY on a generic forum like this. When a person pays $500 for a scope, they WILL rationalize it against ANY criticism. You will hear the "You get what you pay for" and every other excuse. Rifle/pistols are no different. There are some manufacturers that live off of their name, even though their product has proven to go down in quality. Sorry; but Bushmaster is a prime example. They are NOT the bushmaster of 20 years ago. Yet, their normal price for an AR is above $1000 in any gun store. "Except for the new carbons". That price is strictly because of the name they are selling. And people who buy them, will justify and rationalize those prices. Forget price initially. Look through the specific forums and see what the users of those products say. Especially if they aren't being bombarded by people of OTHER BRANDS. If everyone on a forum is an S&W, Rock, bush, Colt, etc... owner; then you don't feel as bad complaining publicly. Everyone is in the same boat. When you're in a generic forum like this, you'll get the stupid replies like: "You shouldn't have bought that"; "You get what you pay for"; etc...

My nephew and one of his army buddies both bought olympic arms AR's when they came home from afghanistan. I went with them on their first outing and they both shot very accuratly and without function problems that day. They are in texas but as far as Im aware they are both still working good and neither one has mentioned any problems to this point and its been several months. From my experience shooting the first day I can say I liked the way it shot. It wasnt anything fancy but it looked good and worked good. I didnt see any reason not to have it, or not to buy one.

I just sold one I had to a friend and he got to try to wear it out before he made the purchase. He purchased it.

On the cast reciever subject I think the last Oly models to have cast recievers were made in the 1980's or early 90's at the latest. I've toured the Oly factory and got to try a bunch of their stuff out at the range. It was pretty interesting, they are a small operation, and at the range none of the AR's had any problems and accuracy was good. You hear a lot of different stuff about these guys and since so many people downtalk the product it does make me a little leary. Also I talked with the shop foreman/supervisor and he was waaaaay out there, struck me as really odd and kind of turned me off to the product. I do want to like them because they are a local company and prices are decent. But i'm not too sure about these so I'd really like to see an unbiased torture test on a few randomly selected Olympic arms AR's.
