I'm looking at buying a used Olympic Arm 20", from my friend for $450. It's in very good condition, comes with two mags, a case, and a sling. Is this a good deal? I've heard mixed reviews about OA.
I know 2 people who have them and they havent had their Olympic Arms AR fall apart or anything drastic. Matter of fact I though they were pretty good rifles. For that price I would buy it.
I've heard a lot of mixed reviews. Some people Wong buy them, other people it's all they'll buy. I just want a "farm gun" beat up fun gun basically. Hit a 3x3 target at 100 yards and I'm good.
Well has he had any problems with it? If not sounds like a pretty good deal. But then you have to question why is he selling it at such a low price to begin with. Or i would unless he's just giving you a deal. Idk maybe i'm just skeptic.
Well he says he hasn't had any problems. He's a pretty good friend who builds AR's. And I asked about a particular model, and he just so happened to have the exact one I wanted. But he says he's had no problems. I already have a Bushmaster AR. So this would be my "fun gun" if you will. If I can't hit a dog size target at 100 yards, I'm just fine.
I know of a couple of Olys which have not had any problems for over 10 years since new. I also know of a couple of Olys which had to go in for repair once in the same time frame. I was shooting one of the repaired rifles when it broke. Stuck bolt. I would not be afraid to own one for the price given. The four I know of don't shoot too bad either.
Ive had two of the older ones. These were made probably 10-15 years ago and they were nothing but problems. that said ive shot a few of the newer ones for the last couple years and they seemed like alot better guns.
The AR market in 2009 was far different. Everybody was still panic buying due to Obama taking office (there was an expectation that another AWB was right around the corner). Supply got tight, demand went through the roof, prices went way up. For a while you couldn't find a barrel, LPK, or BCG at all; when new supply came out they were snapped right up. Rifles that would otherwise go for $600 were over $800, the $800 rifles were selling at just over $1000 (I saw one dude asking something like $1300-1500 for a garden variety Bushmaster... he wasn't having any takers, so there was a limit).
Now the market has been fed, demand has dropped, and supply has eased. Some things still will not be cheap (cold hammer forged barrels just aren't going to go for peanuts because they're more expensive to make), but the consumer level ARs have indeed dropped in price.
I have an Oly that I bought back in the Spring. I have several hundred rounds through it and it has been 100% reliable. I don't see how I would get a much better gun for several hundred dollars more.
The first AR that I bought nearly 20yrs ago is an Olympic and it stands in the safe right now and ready to go...having never given a problem after 1000's of rounds.
